It is harder to stay focused: During our menstrual cycle, it is more difficult to stay focused. Ever wonder why you procrastinate a work assignment or skip a deadline at this time of the month? Ob-gyn Alyssa Dweck, M.D., coauthor of V is for Vagina, explains that during a woman's period her neurotransmitters, or the chemical messengers in your body, are affected, which makes it more difficult to concentrate. If you experience the same symptom after your period, then it is highly suggested to visit your doctor.

You can't get good sleep: Catching your ZZZ's could be difficult when you are dealing with cramping (ouch!), but there may also be another scientific reason for your lack of sleep during your menstrual cycle. During this time of the month, women experience lower estrogen levels, which can increase restless sleep. Try drinking chamomile tea for a natural way to calm your body and get more bedtime.

You feel more depressed than usual: Your period changes your natural hormone levels, which could cause you to feel more down than normal. Sara Gottfried, M.D., the author of The Hormone Cure, suggests getting at least 30 minutes of exercise a day. She also states, "Aim for 2,000 milligrams a day from a supplement containing both EPA and DHA omega-3 fatty acids, along with foods that are rich in the nutrients, like walnuts, flaxseed, tofu, and grass-fed beef." If you still don't notice a change, visit your doctor for help.
