Summer is a great time to go on a family vacation to discover new and exciting places. Here are 12 ideas that we hope will get you going. The good thing is that there's something for everyone. Here's to family fun!

Connect with nature.

There are a lot of community, city and even some national parks that you can visit for free. The adventure can be as short or as long as you desire. So you can go for a picnic with your family or for an overnight camping trip. Luckily, the Toyota Highlander was built to take you places and it has more than enough cargo space for you to bring anything and everything you need to create unforgettable memories.

Live sports differently.

Join in the American tradition of tailgating which, contrary to popular belief, is not something that's only done during football games. Baseball and soccer stadiums across the country allow for this type of events to go on and they're super fun! Even if it's something your family is not used to, it's not a bad idea to try a new adventure. You can take a cooler with food and drinks and you can check out what others are doing. Or, better yet, tag along with some friends who are already tailgating experts!

Use the power of music to connect with your kids.

A trip where headphones are banned (even if only for a short time) is a great idea. Your kids will most likely protest because they won't be able to isolate themselves, but give it a try and see how you'll get closer as a family in a fun and simple way. Get your kids to take turns choosing songs. Take this opportunity to teach them about some classics, and be prepared to learn some new tunes from them too. In the meantime, thanks to the Toyota Highlander's five USB ports, everybody can keep their phones charged and maybe everyone will end up addings some new songs to their playlists afterwards.

Take your kids and their friends somewhere they want to go.

Maybe it's to a new skate park or to a movie they've been dying to see. Offer to drive them and pay attention. Sometimes, listening to our kids as they interact with their friends is the best way to learn what they really like. One of the best parts of the Toyota Highlander is that it has three rows of super comfortable seats, with enough room for eight people. This means it's also perfect for our big, Latino families.

Visit a farm.

Look at this as a family field trip. Kids and most adults, for that matter, usually don't get to see where the food we consume comes from. This is a great opportunity for the family to learn about this together. If the idea of spending the afternoon with farm animals is not your thing, considering picking your own berries instead.

Attend a special event.

But let your kids choose the one they'd like to go to this summer. It could be a fun convention like Comic-Con or one especially for Quinceañeras, for example. Going to these type of events as a family can be a lot of fun.

Go on a road trip within your state.

Choose two or three places you want to visit for sure, but leave a lot of room so you can discover things as you go along. It'll be a fun adventure and you never know what unexpected things you may end up seeing or doing. With incredible horsepower and up to 29 combined MPG, the Toyota Highlander can really take you places while helping you stay on budget.

Go fishing.

Whether you are experts or not, fishing is always fun. Make sure everyone in the family helps with the packing and get ready to spend a great day in the outdoors. The Toyota Highlander is the perfect vehicle to take all the fishing rods, a cooler for your catch, a tackle box, waders, wading boots and all the other gear you'll need.

Take the scenic route.

You don't have to go on a long road trip to enjoy amazing views. Find a scenic route close to your city or town and take a mini road trip, take some amazing pictures and have fun without spending a fortune.

Enjoy an outdoor movie.

Or, better yet, a good old-fashioned drive-in. While there are many venues that offer free movies at the park, there's nothing like the experience of watching a movie from the hood of your car, the way it was done in years past. The Toyota Highlander seats are so comfortable that there is the risk that your kids will never want to go to a traditional movie theatre ever again.

Go on a scavenger hunt.

It can be something simple you create yourself with clues that you hide in the park near your own home or you can go geocaching. Either way it's a great way to get your family outdoors and having fun together.

Take them to an outdoor concert.

Most towns have all kinds of options when it comes to free concerts. From jazz to reggaeton, you can surely find something everyone will enjoy. Plan to spend the afternoon there and plan accordingly by putting together a picnic basket and taking your own chairs or blankets.
