The Grow app
Shakira's new app, Grow, provides tips for raising bilingual children, which we all know can be a difficult undertaking. “I wanted it to be something that wasn’t overwhelming, but that was really thorough and offered a rich variety of content,” she told PopSugar.
On raising bilingual kids
The Latina star admits that you have to come up with a strategy when raising your kids bilingual. She explained to PopSugar, "It helps if they are able to associate a person with a language at this early stage, to minimize language confusion. Their father, for example, always speaks to them in Catalan. I try to speak to them in mostly English, but if I switch, I try to not mix two languages in one sentence. Their first words were both 'mama.'"
On raising "modern men"
Shakira isn't about passing down any machista traditions. "Growing up with a working mom is a start," she told Parents Latina in 2015. She's right about that!
Treat them as equals
There aren't any favorites or special treatment in the Shakira household! "In Spain, parents speak to their children as equals, and I feel that the children respond in turn," she told Parents Latina.
Building a sense of security
For Shakira, the best parenting advice she ever received was so show children an "abundance of love." "You can never show you love them too much. A sense of security from early on gives them limitless room to develop their abilities and become responsible, caring adults," she told PopSugar.
There are "no shortcuts"
When announcing her collaboration with Fisher-Price in 2014, Shakira spoke about her thoughts on parenting. "There are no shortcuts, in the end, to learning how to be a parent. I’m sure I’ve made mistakes, and there are probably many things I will continue to try doing better," she told Huffington Post.
On raising toddlers
The toddler years are difficult for any mom, but Shakira focuses on the lessons they teach her everyday. She told PopSugar, "The older they get, the more interesting the challenges — I’ve only gotten to the toddler stage so far, but each one keeps me on my toes and forces me to educate myself further as I’m working to educate them along with their teachers."
On letting your kids use technology
Shakira has her thoughts about allowing your kids access to technology at an early age. "No matter what, kids still need time to be outside and play with others, and just be kids. I view technology the same way I view television: everything in moderation," she told Huffington Post.
On educational apps
Educational apps can have their pros and cons, according to Shakira. She mentioned in an interview with Huffington Post, "I don’t think it hinders development and there are many educational apps that can be useful as teaching tools, but addiction isn’t good either."
It's normal to question your parenting style
Shakira has her doubts all of the time. She told People in 2015, "Motherhood is the hardest job on earth."
