I'm not a fan of reality TV, which is why I'm totally appalled at this latest project. I thought a nun based reality show was sacrilege, but this is EVEN worse. Somehow Lifetime managed to get the okay to make a reality show called Born in the Wild about moms giving birth. To be specific, women giving birth outdoors in nature WITHOUT the help of doctors.
I'm all for doing things as naturally as possible, but this is TOO much for me to handle!

The show will be centered around young moms who have decided to give birth out in the wilderness among nature because they believe it's a better approach than being admitted to a hospital. The project was inspired by the YouTube video portraying user Birthinnature delivering her baby out in the wild without any medical assistance. The mom in the video says that this birthing style has made her mothering more profound.
Although it is the only video on the account, over 20 million people have watched it since it first went live in February. There are many women out there who are interested in having a natural type of birth, but this method concerns critics and doctors because it is dangerous and they are afraid of it influencing other mothers-to-be to do the same.
The TV network assures critics that they are taking precautionary measures when shooting the show. Lifetime's senior vice president, Eli Lehrer, said, "Our presence at these births is going to make them far safer than if they were doing it on their own." No, dude, just NO.
He tries to make the situation seem less extreme by explaining that not many women have signed up for the show. He also rationalizes that not many women will want to try this method of delivery because it's a specific group of people that do. That's not a good enough reason!
First of all I believe giving birth is a private moment that not everyone should be present for. Secondly, if you are going to give birth this way, it might be smart to have a midwife or a doctor present in case something goes wrong. A TV crew does NOT count as medically trained professionals! Thirdly, why would you broadcast yourself on national television during a totally intimate moment? I really hope Lifetime cancels this project before it hits the air … but something tells me they're still going to go on with the show. If you want to get a sampling of what Lifetime wants to broadcast, check out the video below, but I WARN you, it IS graphic!
