I don’t know about you, but I’m always on the hunt for a new Netflix series to watch, and if they happen to be in Spanish – woo hoo! My husband does not speak Spanish, and even though my daughters do, whenever he’s around, I speak in English so I don’t have to repeat myself, and that makes my Spanish get un poco rusty. So, in a way I could say that watching a top Netflix series that just happens to be in Spanish is really me making sure I don’t lose all of my Spanish. At least that’s what I tell my husband when I’m watching a really good series like Sky Rojo. “Baby, I’m just studying my Spanish,” I say. And then I “jajajaja,” in Spanish.

But in all seriousness, let’s talk about Sky Rojo! The second season of this thriller series is available on Netflix starting July 23, 2021. If you haven’t seen the first season yet, no problem. It’s on the streaming platform just waiting to be binged so you can make your way to season two. Also, because it’s a Netflix Spain production, you don’t have to worry about it leaving the platform any time soon. So, let’s get into everything about Sky Rojo, the Spanish Netflix series that everyone is talking about.
It’s from the creators of the popular series 'Money Heist.'
The series was created by Álex Pina and Esther Martínez Lobato, who also created Money Heist. That show quickly became the most popular Spanish-language series on Netflix. Currently, there are four seasons, or “parts” as Netflix likes to call them, available for streaming, and a fifth season is in the works. It makes sense that Netflix would be eager to get another series from the same creators.
Season one of ‘Sky Rojo’ premiered on March 19, 2021.
All you have to do is watch the trailer of the first season to see that this show will make your heart race and keep your adrenaline pumping from start to finish. The creators of the show call it “Latin Pulp.” In case you need a definition of what “pulp” means in this case, Urban Dictionary defines it as a “movie, book, or other type of publication with lurid subject matter, such as crime. Often shocking subjects portrayed as non-shocking.”
There are eight episodes in season one.
Each episode is anywhere from 22 minutes to 31 minutes, which makes it particularly dangerous to sit down and watch because you could conceivably watch the entire season in one sitting.
This isn’t a show you are going to want to watch with your kids.
Keep in mind that this show deals with ADULT topics and we mean ADULT in capital letters. So unless your kids are adults, you should wait until they are not around to watch it. It’s rated TV-MA and it contains violence, sex, nudity, sexual violence, drugs, language, and smoking. You have been warned!
What is ‘Sky Rojo’ about?
If you look at the description on Netflix, it reads: "A fatal turn of events at a brothel sends three women haunted by their pasts on a wild run from their pimp and his henchmen."
Not for nothing, though, the descriptions on Netflix are never that great, so don’t judge the show by its Netflix description.

Argentine singer, songwriter, actor, dancer, model and director Lali Espósito portrays Wendy. She started singing and acting professionally in 2003 and is quite successful. Netflix writes about Lali as Wendy:
Lali Espósito is Wendy. Impulsive, determined… A force of nature who's not scared of anything.

What about season two?
Season two is available for streaming starting on July 23, 2021. The second season will consist of eight 25-minute action-packed episodes.
"We wanted Sky Rojo to have the same frenetic action as always, but to use that 25-minute runtime to underline the dynamic nature of the plot: the getaway, the race for survival," the creators of the show noted in a statement. "The third act of a movie or an episode is where all the energy converges to produce the most vibrant explosion of all the conflicts that are being narrated. What we set out to do was to make a constant third act, to funnel our entire story through that frenzied energy."
Why is season two available so soon after season one?
Well, that’s because the show was renewed for a second season even before the first season aired. How nice is it not to have to wait an entire year to keep binge-watching a show?
How will season two differ from season one?
Well, this time around the hunted become the hunters. In other words, while season one showed Coral, Wendy, and Gina being hunted like prey, this time around they are the ones on the hunt for Romeo and his dastardly crew. Watch out boys!
What do the stars of the show have to say about it?
Well, in a behind-the-scenes style video, the actors used descriptors like trippy, shameless, brave, risky, adrenaline rush, and explosive. They clearly enjoyed the process and it shows.
