One of the craziest things about watching Luis Miguel on Netflix is that since it’s about Luis Miguel, who is hecka famous, it also involves other very famous people because famous people tend to know other famous people. That means that certain plot points on the show have brought up some serious feelings and reactions from the famous people being portrayed, especially since they didn’t have a say in how the show represented them. It happened as a result of season one of the series and it is also happened as a result of season two of Luis Miguel: The Series. There is plenty of drama and controversy depicted on screen in the series and the controversy has spilled into real life.
More from MamásLatinas: All about Luis Miguel's relationship with daughter Michelle Salas
OK, before you read any further, be very aware that if you have not completed watching the second season of Luis Miguel: The Series on Netflix, there will be spoilers. There’s no way to discuss the on-camera and off-camera drama without spoilers. The spoilers have to do with the famous people who have publicly expressed opinions about Luis Miguel season two including: Michelle Salas, Stephanie Salas, Isabella Camil, Patricia Manterola, Cristian Castro, and Sylvia Pasquel. Honestly, a whole other series could be made about the drama that Luis Miguel: The Series has caused in certain circles.
Season two made Patricia Manterola look like quite the flirt, not that there's anything wrong with that.
OK, on the show, her name was changed to Paula Montero, but the character was based on the Mexican singer and actress Patricia Manterola. Anyway, the character of Paula appears as one of the many Luis Miguel romances featured and she’s also super flirty with Cris Valdés, the character based on singer Cristian Castro. Honestly, why even bother changing the names? Must be for legal reasons because it’s not like people can’t figure out who the characters are in real life.
Patricia Manterola had a few choice words to say about the Paula character.
"You know that I have always been a woman who stays far away from scandals, respectful and transparent, so for those who have asked me, Luis Miguel's series refers to a woman who sang 'Everybody loves banana' and wore a wardrobe identical to one that I used in the group," she wrote in a message via social media. "Like many, I automatically thought of Garibaldi. I categorically tell you that if they are making any allusion to me, it differs completely from the quality of woman that I have always been and with the private history that I lived in those years."
But Patricia has admitted to having a relationship with Luis.
Back in 2017, she gave an interview and talked about how she was part of Luis' romances. But from how she tells it, it was always Luis who pursued her whenever she happened to be single.
How does Cristian Castro feel about his fictitious portrayal?
Remember, the character of Cris Valdés is assumed to be a fictitious version of Cristian Castro. According to singer Carlos Macías, who is also portrayed in the series, Cristian wasn’t bothered at all. In an interview with Chisme No Like, Carlos said:
The truth is that I talked to him and he was dying of laughter. He said: ‘It doesn't bother me at all.' There are things that are not true, in the words of Cris himself, but he is happy.
Now, let's talk about what Michelle Salas had to say about her dad's series.
On April 20, 2021, Michelle posted a series of photos of herself on Instagram and wrote: "Advice to be happy: don't listen to everything they tell you, don't believe everything you see and don't say everything you know ."
A lot of people are taking the caption to be her reaction to Luis Miguel season 2. If it is, it's not bad advice. You can't take a dramatized version of someone's life as fact.
Michelle shared her thoughts on how she felt seeing herself played by someone else.
In an interview with ¡HOLA! México, she said:
I have seen some chapters and, of course, when you see your life played by someone other than you, there are mixed feelings. If one day I decide to tell my reality, that day many things will change. But I don’t think it’s the time yet.
Michelle does understand that the actress portraying her did her best.
Macarena Achaga is the actress who plays Michelle in the series Luis Miguel on Netflix and Michelle does not seem to harbor any ill will toward her.
"I understand that she is an actress who was given a script, did her research and, from her point of view, does her best," she noted. "That does not mean that things are necessarily like that, there is also a lot of fiction. Very few people know my life as it really is and how things happened or not, since, I repeat, I have always been very careful and protective of my privacy and that of my family."
Michelle had a lot more to say once all of season two had aired.
Once all episodes of Luis Miguel: The Series season two aired, Michelle felt compelled to share her reactions to how she was portrayed via a series of three Instagram Stories filled with her writing.
"First of all, it seems important to me to clarify that I did not allow, at any time, the use of my image, my name or my personal life," she wrote. "Just as they did not ask me if I agreed with my life becoming a television series and one of the main characters in its fictional interpretation. Yes, I have lived unforgettable moments with my father and I am glad that you can know a small part of the relationship we have had. But I have to say that I find it truly unnecessary, disrespectful and unfortunate the way the production decides to treat a woman, his daughter, to end this chapter of its story. Explicitly sexualizing her at 19 years of age and violating her privacy."
Michelle’s mother, Stephanie Salas, defended her daughter 'tooth and nail!'
She shared a picture of her daughters with an accompanying voice-over and caption. The caption reads:
"I want to share with you this photograph that I took in 1997 when Mich was 7 years old and Cami was 7 months old.
"This photo represents one of the happiest and most alive moments of my existence, where I felt the fullness of having formed a home. A home that I have always defended tooth and nail! Because this is my home, and this is my private life, although many do not like it and seem to care very little.
"Today, as a mother of a family, I deeply support the sincere and painful words that have come from my daughter's heart, in defense of her person.
"I find it reprehensible, unnecessary and in bad taste, the way in which the creatives and those involved in the second season of the series of Mr. Gallego, my daughter's father, have portrayed the image of my daughter Michelle.
"Hopefully they realize that they have touched very sensitive fibers, trespassing and personally attacking the dignity, respect, and integrity that my daughter Michelle Salas, as a woman deserves.
"On behalf of my daughters, my mother and myself, we say.
"Stop! "
Camila Valero, Michelle’s sister, also expressed her support and heartache.
Camila shared a lovely message about how she and Michelle were raised in a loving home that valued privacy. Still, there were always comments being made about their mother’s life and it now pains her to see Michelle going through the same thing.
How did Diego Boneta respond to the criticisms about Michelle’s portrayal?
Diego Boneta plays the adult version of Luis Miguel throughout the series and he’s also one of the producers of the Netflix series. He had some comments about the criticisms the series faces over its treatment of Michelle Salas.
"I am one of several producers, believe me that if I were the one with the final decision it would be another way, but I am one of several producers," he said. "In the end it is something told by Luis Miguel and we try to do this in the best possible way, with the best possible quality."
Sylvia Pasquel, mother of Stephanie Salas, had a few things to say about how her daughter was portrayed.
"It is good that justice is being done to my daughter, because she has always been a decent woman, a woman who has not taken advantage to make a scandal, or to make waves or to make noise," the actress said.
"She always stayed on the sidelines, always kept her secrecy on the matter, as real as there is a girl involved. So in this second part it seems to me that they are finally doing justice to my daughter and they are staging her as she really is, an empathetic girl and always in the best disposition to give the best to her daughters because she has dedicated her life to educating those girls."
And what about Issabela Camil?
Camila Sodi plays Issabela Camil, a major character and love interest in the Luis Miguel Netflix series. Issabela doesn't confirm or dispute anything in the series publicly, but she did share that she has discussed certain things with one of her daughters.
"Antonia is more interested in things in my life and I tell her aabout them openly, I have nothing to hide," she said. "Her mother had a past, she had other relationships … At no point do I say that I want to get rid of it. It's just something I don't want to share; but I will always speak the truth to my daughters. They will know absolutely everything they want to know."
Also, Issabela has made it clear that she has nothing to hide.
During an interview, Issabela said: "I have nothing to hide, there are two people, each one has a way of telling their story, it is not more mine, it does not belong to me … I do not have the rights, or signed what? It's ridiculous, if it was something I'm embarrassed about, I'd say, 'Oh well.' But no, it's something that happened."
Sergio Mayer, Issabela Camil’s husband, has been asked for his opinion.
Politician Sergio Mayer responded like a politician by saying: "It would not be objective if I made a comment regarding the series, I have not seen it. I have had comments from people who have been violated by that series. They might take it as subjective. Many people have told me that it has been a misogynistic series that has attacked women a lot. It would be irresponsible for me to make this opinion."
The controversies surrounding the second season of the series are a good reminder.
A reminder that you can’t take everything you see on screen as fact. It’s one person’s dramatized depiction of what happened. Artistic liberties were taken and you can’t always trust a person’s memories to begin with, but it’s definitely an entertaining series. Can't wait to see what happens in the third and final season.
