When it comes to mental and physical health struggles, Selena Gomez has been incredibly honest with her fans. And recently, Selena Gomez revealed a new health condition while responding to body-shamers.
More from MamĂĄsLatinas: Selena Gomez makes it clear she âcanât carry childrenâ because of âmedical issuesâ
To recap, Selena has been in the spotlight since she was 9 after snagging a role in the popular kids’ show Barney & Friends. She went on to appear in Hannah Montana and The Suite Life of Zack & Cody before snagging the life-changing role of Alex Russo in Wizards of Waverly Place. She is now 32 and although she has been open about her health through the years, the actress/singer/producer only recently dished on a condition previously unknown to fans.
Selena Gomez recently revealed a new health condition.
Selena recently attended a premiere of her Netflix film Emilia Perez, and she popped into the comments of a social media post where body-shamers criticized her look and posture. In the comments, she revealed a health condition that she’s not publicly spoken of before.
âThis makes me sick,â she wrote in a since-deleted reply, per Elle. âI have [SIBO] in my small intestine. It flares up. I donât care that I donât look like a stick figure. I donât have that body. End of story. No I am NOT a victim. Iâm just human.â
What is SIBO?
Previously, Selena has opened up about her lupus.
Selena was diagnosed with lupus â an autoimmune disease â in 2013 but waited until 2015 to speak about it publicly. In April 2023, Selena discussed via TikTok Live how her lupus medication causes her to hold “a lot of water weight,” seemingly in response to recurring comments about her body.
“I would much rather be healthy and take care of myself,” she told fans, per Elite Daily. “My medications are important, and I believe that they’re what helps me.”
She underwent chemotherapy and a kidney transplant because of it.
A few years later, in 2017, Selena’s friend and fellow actress Francia Raisa donated a kidney after Selena’s lupus caused kidney failure.
“My best friend. Her name is Francia. She said, ‘No, I am absolutely getting tested,'” Selena shared in an episode of the Apple TV+ docuseries, Dear… “And within three days, she went to get tested, and she was a match. And it was one of those moments where I felt watched over. I know I was so so so lucky.”
Additionally, Selena has spoken about her bipolar disorder diagnosis.
Later, Selena was diagnosed with bipolar disorder in 2018 but didn’t reveal the condition until 2020.
“I’m going to be very open with everybody about this: I’ve been to four treatment centers,” she told Rolling Stone in November 2022. “I think when I started hitting my early twenties is when it started to get really dark, when I started to feel like I was not in control of what I was feeling, whether that was really great or really bad.”
She also recently revealed she is unable to carry her own children because of her health issues.
During a September sit-down with Vanity Fair, Selena made a candid confession.
âI havenât ever said this, but I unfortunately canât carry my own children,” she told the publication. “I have a lot of medical issues that would put my life and the babyâs in jeopardy. That was something I had to grieve for a while.â
Of course, Selena could still theoretically welcome children via a gestational carrier or adoption, if she so chooses.
