Selena Gomez makes it clear she ‘can’t carry children’ because of ‘medical issues’

Last month I wrote about how a picture of Selena Gomez placing her hands on her abdomen while at Cannes to promote her new film Emilia Perez, had fans speculating that she could be pregnant. Well, she wasn’t and what’s more she won’t be getting pregnant ever because as she told Vanity Fair in a recent interview, she “can’t carry” her own children.

However, that doesn’t mean we won’t someday see Selena playing the role of mom in real life. She has been candid for some time that motherhood is a goal of hers. And now that she’s deep in what appears to be a loving and committed relationship with music producer Benny Blanco, it’s possible that motherhood is not too far away for the newly minted billionaire. Especially, since Benny has made it clear that his next “goal” is to have babies with her.

Check out what Selena has to say about the health issues that prevent her from considering getting pregnant, but how that won’t stop her from having children.

Hello, cover girl!

The October 2024 issue of Vanity Fair features Ms. Gomez looking confident and radiant. “She’s seriously in love—and making the best work of her career,” reads the caption shared by Vanity Fair on Instagram.

There's a light in her life!

“With the audacious Emilia Pérez hitting theaters this fall and Only Murders in the Building returning to TV, the actor, singer, entrepreneur, and mental health advocate has no shortage of things to feel good about, most notably her relationship with hitmaker Benny Blanco,” the caption continues. "‘I’ve never been loved this way,’ Gomez tells VF. ‘He’s just been a light. A complete light in my life.’”

In the accompanying interview, Sel revealed that getting pregnant is not an option.

“I haven’t ever said this,” she told Vanity Fair, “but I unfortunately can’t carry my own children. I have a lot of medical issues that would put my life and the baby’s in jeopardy. That was something I had to grieve for a while.”

After grieving, she now finds herself in a ‘better place.’

“It’s not necessarily the way I envisioned it,” she continued. “I thought it would happen the way it happens for everyone. [But] I’m in a much better place with that. I find it a blessing that there are wonderful people willing to do surrogacy or adoption, which are both huge possibilities for me.”

She knows she has options and is grateful.

“It made me really thankful for the other outlets for people who are dying to be moms. I’m one of those people. I’m excited for what that journey will look like, but it’ll look a little different. At the end of the day, I don’t care. It’ll be mine. It’ll be my baby.”

And maybe it will be Benny’s baby, too.

Benny and Selena have been dating since July 2023, after having known each other since they collaborated on the song “Same Old Love” in 2015 and also on “I Can’t Get Enough” featuring Tainy and J Balvin in 2019.

Things between them are hot, heavy, and future-minded.

As Selena told Vanity Fair, Benny is “a complete light in my life.” And Benny told Sirius XM host Howard Stern in May that his “next goal” is to have babies with Selena.

She’s hinted at pregnancy not being a possibility for her before.

In 2022, Selena told Rolling Stone that she takes medication for her bipolar disorder that would likely keep her from being able to carry her own children and that it was a “very big, big, present thing” in her life, but that she was certain that however she was meant to have children, she would have them.

In addition to her mental health challenges, Selena was also diagnosed with lupus in 2013 and received a kidney transplant in 2017. Although, the kidney transplant was a success, it’s important to note that Selena will most likely need another kidney transplant in her lifetime.

She also told Rolling Stone in 2022, that her transplanted kidney might last her 30 years, which is a generous estimate considering places like the Mayo Clinic say kidney transplants from living donors, like the one Selena had, last about 14 years on average.

That’s the average, so Selena’s transplant could last longer, but it could also last for a shorter time. The point being that Selena will always have to be careful and cannot take her health for granted.
