The powerful female costume ideas that we've come up with are meant to celebrate the totality of feminine power. Does that mean that we think princess, fairies, and fairy princesses can't be powerful? No, of course not. But it does mean that we think mothers and daughters deserve more choices.
Honestly, the truth is that there are no "girl" or "boy" Halloween costumes. There are just costumes. On this occasion, we decided to focus on empowering female costumes because we want to raise our daughters to be empowered women. Many of our costume ideas are inspired by actual women who have proven themselves to be powerful. We also have fictional, mythical, and professional options for you and your little ones to consider. Whatever you choose to dress up as, more power to you!
Who doesn't like firefighters?
While more women are choosing careers as firefighters, they make up less than 10% of the US fire service. Is that because women don't make for good firefighters? Nope, it's because for so long only little boys have been encouraged to dream of being firefighters.
Frida Kahlo is kind of a no-brainer.
The Mexican artist known for her many self-portraits is a constant source of inspiration for so many. She was 47 years old when she died in 1954, but as the years pass, her legacy only continues to grow. Putting together a Frida Kahlo costume for your or your daughter is pretty easy, since her crown of flowers and unibrow are so iconic and recognizable.
Ellen Ochoa was the first Latina to go to space.
In 1993, Ellen Ochoa became the first Latina to go to space. She was part of the space shuttle Discovery mission. You or your little one could dress up as an astronaut, or if you want to pay tribute to Ochoa, you could add a name tag to your costume with her name on it.

Rosie the Riveter helped recruit women into the workforce during World War II.
The American workforce was in dire need of workers during World War II because so many men were enlisted. Women were inspired and encouraged by images of Rosie the Riveter to take jobs that were previously not even open to them.
Adelitas fought in the Mexican Revolution.
Adelitas were soldaderas who fought alongside the men during the Mexican Revolution. Soldaderas existed before the Mexican Revolution, but their numbers swelled during the revolution.
Dolores Huerta has spent her life being an activist and labor leader.
She cofounded what eventually became the United Farm Workers union along with Cesar Chavez. There is an iconic photo of her holding up a protest sign. To dress up like her for Halloween, you can make your own. Have it say "HUELGA" with a United Farm Workers eagle on it.
Amelia Earhart was the first woman to fly solo across the Atlantic.

She's a journalist, social activist, editor, and general tough lady who has been fighting for women's rights pretty much ever since she came out of the womb in 1934. To dress up like her, you could channel one of her iconic looks with the long hair, oversized sunglasses, low-slung jeans, and belt.
Joan of Arc led the French army to victory.
Joan of Arc had no military training when she somehow convinced Prince Charles of Valois, who later became King Charles VII, to let her lead the French army against the English at the city of Orléans. In 1431, she was burned at the stake when she was 19 years old after being tried for witchcraft and heresy.

She spoke about a dozen languages and was highly educated. Born some time around 70 BC, she ruled Egypt as a coregent for close to three decades.
