6 Powerful herbs to get you through flu season

Cold and flu season is here in full force. In fact, as I write this I'm nursing a doozy of a cold. These days, I typically choose to avoid the chemicals and additives found in most cold, cough and flu medications and wait it out with an occasional dose of acetaminophen to ease a sore throat or headache and a number of more natural remedies that can help ease symptoms and reduce the duration of the illness.

Here is a list of some of my favorite herbal remedies and how they'll help you fight the flu. If you have access to a holistic healthcare practitioner, call them up for advice regarding these herbs. Alternately, visit your local natural foods store to purchase products and get tips for treatment.

Ginseng

Though ginseng has been used as an immune system booster by many cultures for generations, a recent study by a scientist at Georgia State University Institute for Biomedial Sciences proved that not only does ginseng have immune modifying effects, but it also improves the survival of human lung epithelial cells infected with the flu virus.

Elderberry

When taken at the onset of symptoms, elderberry syrup has been shown to dramatically reduce flu symptoms within a couple of days in most people. Elderberries contain antioxidants cold flavonoids that supply a major boost to the immune system and in combination with the anti-inflammatory properties of the berries, can eliminate the flu. Elderberry syrup can be purchased at the pharmacy or can be made at home.

Echinacea

When taken regularly beginning at the start of cold or flu symptoms, echinacea can help improve your systems and aid you in getting better faster. Echinacea is readily available in the supplement section of most big box stores and pharmacies.

Thyme

For centuries, thyme has been used to relieve chest and respiratory issues, coughs, colds and even bronchitis, due to its antibacterial, anti-fungal and spasmolytic properties. Plus, thyme can be purchased cheaply in a regular grocery store and is a common ingredient in commercial cough drops. Use the fresh herb to make a tea to sip when you're sick.

Eucalyptus

One of the active ingredients in our beloved Vapo-Rub is eucalyptus. That's because it has the power to knock out almost every symptom associated with the flu. It's antibacterial, anti-fungal, antispasmodic, antiseptic, astringent and analgesic. Plus, it's an expectorant, which means it will help break up congestion. It really is a cure all.

Goldenseal

Goldenseal is a particularly popular remedy in the United States. In fact, it was commonly used as a medication for various illnesses by Native Americans. Today, it is touted as a natural antibiotic and immunity booster. It soothes mucus membranes and if taken at the onset of symptoms, it can prevent further systems from occurring. It is also readily available in the supplement section of most stores.
