In a new study published in the Journal of Nutritional Biochemistry, researchers suggest that a compound found in watermelon, citrulline, is great for losing weight, lowering your cholesterol and unclogging your arteries, according to the study done with mice.

In the study, one group of mice were fed a diet high in saturated fat and cholesterol (all of the bag things that harm your body, including make you gain weight) as well as receiving water that contained two percent watermelon juice. Well, here's the AMAZING news: the mice that had the watermelon juice gained 30 percent less weight and had 50 percent less bad cholesterol. Wow!

Basically, drinking watermelon juice (and I bet the same goes for eating watermelon, which is full of juice) makes you gain less weight even when you're eating extremely bad, fatty foods–GREAT news for all of us that love agua fresca!

Of course, more research needs to be done but I for one know EXACTLY what I'm going to do with this information: eat more watermelon, like with these great Latin watermelon recipes! I mean, if it's going to help lower my cholesterol, keep my heart healthy AND trim my waistline, then this pretty much the best news EVER.
