This recipe is so easy that you and your kids will enjoy making candles so much that you will be known as the candle lady!
Ingredients
Wax: You can choose paraffin, beeswax, soy wax or old candle wax. Paraffin is the most common and it's great for first time candle makers. It's inexpensive and it burns easily. Beeswax is natural, but it has its own scent which might alter the fragrance of the oil you are using. This type of wax is great for kid's candles. Soy Wax is re-usable and eco-friendly so if you are worried about the environment, this is your choice. It's also easy to clean and burns fast. Old candles' wax is cheaper because you just have to collect old candles, but make sure they are unscented.
Aromatherapy essential oils: The possibilities are endless, you can choose from lavender, cedar wood, eucalyptus, cinnamon among others. Just make sure you buy them in pure form and not mixed.
From the craft store: Buy wicks, double-sided adhesive tape, molds or jars, a candle or candy thermometer, oil-based dyes and wax scissors or knife.
Preparation
1. Cut the wax with the scissors in small chunks so it's easier to melt. Put a double boiler with water on the stove until it boils. Place the chopped wax in the boiling water and wait until it reaches the following temperatures before you remove the hot wax from stove. Paraffin: 122-140 degrees Fahrenheit, Beeswax: 145 ◦F, Soy Wax: 170-180 ◦F, and old candles: 185 ◦F.
2. Add the scent and the dye to the mixture and let it cool until it reaches 125 ◦F.
3. Prepare the molds by attaching the wicks to the bottom of the jar using the adhesive tape. Make sure the wick doubles the length of the mold. Secure the other end of the wick with a stick so it doesn't sink to the bottom when you pour the hot wax. That's all! Let it cool for at least 24 hours and enjoy your new candles.
