In addition to keeping your home clean, it's important to make sure the utensils you keep in it are sanitary as well. How many times have you just given your blender a quick wash, but never gone between the crevices? Probably more times than you care to admit.

Below are the things you are neglecting during your clean ups in the kitchen. Make sure you add these to give these things an extra scrub next time you're doing a thorough spring cleaning.

1. Toaster: You probably use this appliance every single day but barely clean it out. Make sure to give it a thorough cleaning when you see one too many crumbs piling up.

2. Can opener: A can opener is something you use to open up cans of tuna, veggies, fruits, olives, but do you ever wash it? Chances are you don't, but you should because a study has found that its can cover your utensil drawer in E.coli and salmonella.

3. Blender: When you wash a blender, make sure to scrub down the blade and the rubber seal to prevent mold, yeast, E.coli, and salmonella.

4. Knobs and handles: I notice when my mom gives the kitchen a thorough cleaning, she makes sure to clean every knob and handle in the room. Studies have found that these are some of the most contaminated areas in the kitchen that carry E.coli and other serious bacteria that can get you sick.

5. Sponges: How many times have you used the same sponge over and over again? This is an item that you should be replacing often or zapping in the microwave to kill bacteria. Seventy-five percent of household sponges and dish towels are said to harbor  bacteria such as E.coli.

6. Coffee maker: If you drink coffee regularly you should be making sure that your coffee maker is in tip top shape. The last thing you want are gross germs and bacteria getting into your cafecito in the morning.
