The 60-second rule might be the answer to any skin concerns

There's a new skin care tip going viral online that everyone needs to try. If you struggle with breakouts or adult acne, or you simply want cleaner and less-oily skin, Nayamka "Nai" Roberts-Smith has a solution that she says will actually improve the look and feel of your skin.

The Los Angeles-based aesthetician, who owns the Golden Rx Skin Studio and goes by LaBeautyologist on Twitter and Instagram, has gone viral after suggesting that people aren't washing their faces for as long as they should. She created the hashtag #60SecondRule, where she recommends that people wash their faces for a full minute, saying that the extra time will visibly change their skin's condition. And people on social media who have already tried it are totally loving it!

Nai revealed that the average person washes her face for only 20 seconds.

"The 60-second rule will change the way you wash your face forever," she says in the clip. "The average person only really cleanses their face for 15 to 20 seconds. That's really not enough time for your cleansers to do anything." She suggests that people use only their freshly washed fingers, as there's no need for fancy brushes or sponges. You can wet your face, then massage a gentle cleanser onto your skin for an entire minute to allow the ingredients in the products to actually do the work. Any less than that isn't enough time for the product to be effective, no matter how fancy it is. You can then massage every area of your face in a circular motion to promote more circulation, focusing on problem areas. Nai says this will result in thoroughly clean and healthy skin and pores.

And it's definitely working for her!

The LA-based aesthetician has such beautiful skin. The best part is that even though she has her own skin treatment center called the Golden Rx Skin Studio, she still gives people free advice via YouTube, Instagram, and Twitter. She has a fountain of knowledge when it comes to skin care that she's not afraid to share with the world. She focuses on treating women of color and offers in-person consultations at her studio.

The aesthetician is getting support from dermatologists.

During a segment on the show The Doctors, dermatologist Dr. Sonia Batra said that the 60-second rule was a great tip. She recommended that people use a gentle cleanser when trying this tip, as harsh cleansers can strip the skin and cause dryness. The tip is quickly spreading and has also been featured in Allure and Cosmopolitan magazines.

After the tip went viral, people with acne and all sorts of skin issues began giving it a try.

Twitter users began sharing their results after a week of sticking to the routine–and some results were impressive. Nai suggests that you wash your face twice a day, and she suggests using an oil cleanser (try the PreCleanse by Dermalogica) to remove your makeup (because oil attracts oil) and impurities at night, doing that for an additional minute before using your regular face wash. She does warn that some people experience a period of purging after they start the 60-second rule, as it is detoxifying all the sebum and oil that's already existing under the skin.

Some people saw a huge difference in just weeks.

Other users are reporting better and smoother skin texture, a cleaner feeling, fewer breakouts, and an overall glow. If you're anything like me, you know that counting to 60 in your head means that you might get distracted along the way and lose count. Nai suggests singing the Fresh Prince of Bel-Air theme song while you're washing your face, or you can just set a timer on your cellphone. As someone with acne-prone skin, I'm cautious about adding any steps to my skin care routine because I never know how my skin will react. About a week after trying the #60SecondRule, I'm still struggling with acne scars from a recent breakout, but my skin looks more even, my pores are smaller, and my skin feels softer and cleaner than ever. It's also a nice way to relax after a long day and treat myself to a moment of peace while practicing some self-care. That alone makes the time spent worthwhile.
