80s perms are back & it’s proof that curly hair is beautiful

Some say naturally curly hair is having a moment. I say the world is just finally recognizing that our hair is beautiful too. It's not a trend or a faze. Women are simply embracing the texture they were born with and are no longer giving in to society's pressure to straighten it in order to meet Eurocentric beauty standards. Amen to that! With that said, the curly hair movement has shined such a positive light on textured hair that even straight-haired ladies are looking to add a little more bounce to their manes, without the help of a curly iron. Curly-haired perms are back but this time for a generation of women that won't settle for anything that doesn't look 100 percent natural.

More from MamásLatinas: 9 Latina celebs you had NO idea have naturally curly hair

I've never had a perm for very obvious reasons. I was born with naturally curly hair and spent most of my life straightening it with the help of a blow dryer or a flat iron. The only thing I know about perms is from 80s films or the throwback pictures of my straight-haired relatives sporting big voluminious hair all due to chemical processing. I never thought I'd see the day when curly haired perms would make a comeback, but apparently it's back.

Today's perm has less frizz and more definition. Think beach waves like Kim Kardashian or those perfect spirals Halle Berry showed off at this year's Oscar's red carpet.

"It's a great look to get an air-dried finish and a great way to give straight hair a soft bend and movement without additional heat and styling time," Matrix SoColor celebrity stylist George Papanikolas told Instyle. "There are also modern techniques where it can be straighter at the top half with the bend in the hair starting at the mid length and ends. The other big change is using a larger rod to create a loose, soft bend in the hair. We've also seen a big shift away from the over styled curling iron waves to a more natural air-dry texture."

In other words, any straight-haired girl can have the curl pattern of her dreams with this new process. How tight the curls are depends on the width of the rod you choose.

This is a true testament of the natural hair movement's impact on society's beauty standards. They say imitation is a form of flattery and if straight-haired girls are paying money to get their hair to look curly, then that's proof that the world is finally recognizing that our hair is beautiful too. And that, my friends, is progress!
