Every girl who loves having long hair absolutely dreads when it comes time to get a trim–myself included! There's nothing more frustrating than having to cut your hair so it can be healthy and then waiting to get your desired length back. Apparently, now there's a way for you to get a haircut and still keep your exact same length. I promise this isn't a scam! The technique is called "hair dusting" and it's absolutely genius!

"Hair dusting is a technique in which you don't get rid of any hair length, but only the damaged hair tips," L.A. hairstylist Sal Salcedo told Refinery29. "This can be done by snipping the very bottom of each hair strand."
Similar to the Brazilian candle-cutting approach to split ends, which entails using a lit candle to burn off split ends, hair dusting involves smoothing out hair by only cutting off the damaged and split hairs. "Think of it in terms of removing fuzz from clothes," says Salcedo. "You want to smooth the hair out the best you can first, because you need to allow the bad hair to pop out. That's what you will be getting rid of."

As someone who has been trying to recover from heat damage for three years, I'm actually very interested in trying out this technique. One of the reasons why it's taken me so long to fully get my curls back is because I HATE having to give up my length. So I only cut 1 to 2 inches off every few months. Sure, I use protein treatments, hair oils, sulfate-free shampoos, and hair conditioning masks religiously but the truth is, you can't really save dead, damaged ends. The only solution is to snip them off. And what better way than a haircut that only chops the damaged ends off without compromising your length?

But just a warning ladies, not a lot of hair salons do this. I sure as hell know I can't rely on any of the stylists at my Dominican hair salon for this treatment and there's a reason why. According to Salcedo, it's a really time-consuming process and not everyone knows how to do it properly either.
"It's more of a grooming technique, rather than an overall haircut," he says. Mind you, it's not a new thing, so stylists really need to get on this already. "It's been done for ages, some cultures even use different techniques, like fire or razors," he adds.
I've seen the fire technique before and it looks scary AF. I'd choose hair dusting every time and I haven't even tried it yet. I'm just saying.
