National Rum Day: Try this amazing flan with a spirited twist!

This delicious-looking flan is actually a Venezuelan quesillo, which gets its name from the holes that form all over it as it dries to make it look like cheese. It's an amazing dessert and is ubiquitous at any birthday party next to the cake.

These types of flan can be made of any flavor: pineapple, coconut, guanábana, coffee, chocolate. But since today is National Rum Day, we're celebrating with this easy recipe for our traditional dessert but with a little spirit twist: a dash of rum! I hope you like it and make it today in honor of this holiday.

Quesillo flan with rum
Makes 8 servings

Ingredients:
1/4 cup of water
1/2 cup sugar
1 can condensed milk
1 can whole milk (use the condensed milk can to measure)
5 eggs
1 tsp. vanilla extract
1/4 cup rum (I like Ron de Venezuela)

Preparation:

1. In a baking mold, add water and sugar and cook until it caramelizes to a golden color.

2. With the caramel still hot, make sure you fully cover the bottom of the baking mold. Set aside.

3. Heat the oven to 350°F.

4. Blend all the ingredients in a blender until they all mix into a smooth, frothy mixture.

5. Put the milk-egg mixture in the baking mold with the caramel and put in the oven inside another baking dish filled halfway with water.

6. Bake for half an hour and remove from the heat.

7. Let cool for at least 4 hours.

8. Before serving, use a plate to cover the baking mold and turn over carefully so the flan comes out smoothly.

9. Serve cold.
