6 Reasons why you need to stop waxing & start sugaring ASAP

As someone who gets Brazilian waxes every single month, I'd do pretty much anything to get rid of unwanted body hair. I've even considered laser hair removal. So when I heard about sugaring–an ancient hair removal method made from sugar, lemon, and hot water–I knew I had to try it. I headed over to Sugaring Spa in NYC, where I got the treatment done and I have a zillion reasons why you should stop waxing and start sugaring ASAP!

It’s good for sensitive skin.

Unlike regular wax, sugaring is actually good for your skin. It’s completely organic and the paste is literally made from just hot water, lemon, and sugar. “One of the reasons why you don’t get the redness, irritation, or bumps you’d get from waxing, is because sugaring doesn’t adhere to live skin cells like wax does,” says Sugaring Spa esthetician, Andrea Schwartzman. “It doesn’t irritate the skin at all. Instead, because it’s made with sugar, it actually exfoliates, buffs, and moisturizes your skin.”

It hurts less.

“When you wax somebody, you are going with the hair growth and then pulling up against it,” says Schwartzman. “When you’re sugaring, you’re pulling against the hair growth and then pulling with it. Also with sugaring there isn’t as much pulling as there is with waxing. We’re gently passing the paste over the skin and it automatically pulls the hair from the roots.” As someone who waxes regularly, I can promise you sugaring hurts a hell of a lot less.

It’s not hot.

“The heat on the sugar doesn’t need to be hot. It just needs to be warm enough to make it spreadable,” says Schwartzman. “It’s a very sticky paste, so if it’s too hot it won’t even work properly.” The last thing you have to worry about is an esthetician accidentally burning your skin.

It gets rid of ingrowns.

Even with waxing, I still get the occasional ingrown hair, and that’s because waxing sometimes breaks the hairs. “The sugaring technique helps grab the hairs right at the root, better than waxing. Not only will you notice a drastic reduction in ingrown over time, but the hairs in between waxes will take a lot longer to grow back and will grow back a lot finer,” says Schwartzman.

It doesn’t leave you sticky.

I don’t know about you, but I hate finding leftover pieces of wax after a waxing session. This doesn’t happen with sugaring at all. There’s absolutely no leftover paste or stickiness.

It’s a lot more sanitary.

“There’s absolutely no opportunity for double-dipping because there’s no stick and there’s no going back in, resulting in less chances of cross contamination,” says Schwartzman.
