Never in my wildest dreams would I have imagined that I would be one of those moms that does crafts with her kids, but I am! Not only do I do crafts with my kids I actually enjoy it and try to come up with new ideas all the time. Our latest craft creation are these adorable (if I do say so myself) Day of the Dead candy holders. Of course these candy holders can double for both Día de los Muertos and Halloween because both holidays feature skulls and candy.
This craft is so easy to make and I can tell you that it was a huge hit with my kids and they are so excited about giving them out to their friends filled with chocolate treats.

The way this idea came about is that we were home one day and one of my kidders wasn't feeling so well. Keeping a 3-year-old and a 6-year-old indoors can be quite the chore if you don't come up with something fun to do. They love doing art projects and I thought we could make something out of things we already have. Since Halloween and Day of the Dead are coming right up, it only made sense to focus on something along those lines. I really wanted to make something featuring sugar skulls because I love them and they are so colorful. I came across old plastic Easter eggs I had stored and realized that they are totally the shape of a skull. Eureka!
Here's how you can make your own! Not that you need instructions because it's pretty self explanatory, but anyway …
Supplies
Plastic Easter eggs*
Permanent markers in a variety of colors
Directions
Use the permanent markers to draw colorful sugar skull designs on the plastic Easter eggs. If you or your kids need inspiration just search for sugar skull images online to give you ideas.
Let the permanent marker dry fully on the eggs so the designs don't smudge or wipe off. I put the plastic eggs in mini cupcake holders while they dried, you could use egg cartons.
Fill with candy when done.
*If you don't have plastic Easter eggs you could adapt this craft and use hard boiled eggs and decorate them. You won't be able to use them as candy holders, but it's still a fun Day of the Dead craft to do with your kids.
