5 Ways to handle cellulite

Ladies, I know I'm not alone when I say that the mother of all evils is cellulite. Maybe I'm being a little dramatic, but you know what I mean. The thing is wholly impossible! We are born with it and after that it seems like everything we do accentuate it more. We all have it, but we don't have to live with it. There are diets and exercises we can do to diminish the appearance and even eliminate those stubborn little bumps.

What you should know: In order to disguise or eliminate cellulite we have to understand what it is first. Basically is genetic, so if your mom has you will have it and your daughter will too. It runs on the female line because is basically nonexistent in men. Lucky them, eh?

But don't be discouraged, you can still camouflage it and even out the skin a bit more. Basically is fat that concentrates under the vertical lines on your skin because the fat cells attach to the collagen on your muscles.

How to deal with it:

1. Eat well! A healthy diet is key to minimize the bumps! Be sure to eat a lot of vegetables, whole grains and fiber to detox your body of the fat content accumulating in your muscles. Also drink plenty of water to restore the collagen.

2. You have to exercise to tone your muscles and tighten the skin since the key word about cellulite is fat. Flabby skin shows more cellulite than a firm one, that's why is almost non existent in professional runners or cyclist. Focus on exercises for your legs and butt since those are the areas where the cellulite is mostly concentrated. Since I started spinning I noticed that my legs slimmed down and the cellulite is not as visible as it used to be.

3. Use exfoliating products: I bought an exfoliating soap ironically called the FatGirlSoap ($19) which helps me message my legs stimulating circulation. Some dermatologist believes that cellulite is caused by bad circulation, but there is not scientific proof about this claim.

4. Don't believe the hype. There are lots of creams, pills, oils and many more products out there that promise to eliminate cellulite, but I don't think they work. Most just work to reduce the appearance of celullite for short periods of time, nothing will really get rid of it completely.

5. In the end, learn to embrace it. I believe we are what we eat and our skin shows it. We need to nourish our body to have healthy skin, drink water and get plenty of rest. Cellulite makes us feminine and that's a beautiful thing, so embrace it!
