We've rounded up a list of some of the necessary tips all new parents need to keep in mind to keep their baby safe and healthy.
Be mindful about who kisses your baby
Germs spread easily and some could be deadly for infants. The threat of passing on herpes or RSV through close contact with a newborn is more real now than ever. Insist that people wash their hands and even mask up before carrying your baby, especially when they're days old. I know as Latinos we want to hug and kiss, but for the safety of your new little one, be careful.
Check your diet when breastfeeding
Your diet while breastfeeding could have unwanted side effects on your baby. Limit caffeine, alcohol, and allergenic foods like peanuts, corn, and eggs.
Prep your older child
You don't want your older child to feel like he or she is a walking threat to the baby. Teach them how to protect and handle the baby without being overwhelming. There are some great Big Sibling kit ideas to also help with the prep!
Keep baby in the shade
Babies have sensitive skin and sunburn easily. Make sure to apply sunblock often (even on cloudy days) and use your stroller's umbrella often.
Go with a natural fiber rug
Rug safety is super important — especially in your baby's room. Many harmful ingredients could cause respiratory and brain development issues. Go with a rug that's made with natural fibers instead.
Vaccinate
Immunizing your baby is a must for protecting them from harmful illnesses. Despite what many critics believe, studies have shown no connection between vaccines and autism. Talk to your pediatrician to be safe and informed.
Carry and wear your baby
Babies experience deep relaxation when being held. You want to make sure you soothe them and keep their emotional stress to a minimum to ensure a healthy child in the future.
Be strict about hand washing
There are plenty of germs that are harmful to babies, which adults carry without even realizing it. Make sure your visitors wash their hands or keep a hand sanitizer nearby to offer them a few pumps!
Don't over-bundle
Before you are tempted to dress your baby like an Eskimo during cold winter months, just know that there is a such thing as over-bundling. According to experts, babies should have one more additional layer compared to mom.
Give baby belly time
While your baby is awake, you want to give them tummy time to avoid plagiocephaly, also known as flat head syndrome. The treatment includes the baby wearing a head-shaping helmet for several months, which could be uncomfortable for baby.
Use gentle creams and washes for your little one
During their first days of life, newborn skin is very delicate. Experts recommend using baby products that are fragrance free and gentle, especially if your baby is prone to dryness or has other skin conditions.
