Parents turn teen daughter in to the police for sexting older boys

Terrified parents freaked out after they discovered nude photos and mature content of their 13-year-old daughter on her phone and tablet. The parents were so alarmed that they turned their adolescent daughter and her devices in to the Dinwiddie County Sheriff's Office in Virginia. The sexting exchanges on her phone were too risqué for her age and her parents were afraid for their daughter since they found text messages from high school seniors asking her for sex.

The parents believe they did the right thing because, clearly, their daughter was playing with fire. She was sending nude pictures of herself in compromising positions to boys using social media websites and apps. The parents believed she did it to appear popular because she suddenly had many new friends.

As a mother of a 13-year-old girl, this case is an eye-opener. There are so many girls out there feeling lonely, unpopular and lost. We really need to talk to our teenage daughters because uploading sexual content online is a huge problem with long lasting consequences. Amateur porn sites can get a hold of that material and before you know it, your daughter's pictures are surfacing in X-rated websites around the world. The moment the content is floating around the web it's almost impossible to get it back and that will hurt the chances of your daughter getting into a good school, college or even getting a future job–not to mention what it'll do to her reputation!

I don't know if turning the daughter in to the police was the best decision for this family, but I do know it's better to do something than nothing at all. The parents confiscated the devices from the confused child and the mother advises us all to set up parental controls in our teenager's devices. I hope their daughter–who could face charges–sees the mistake she made and finds a way to get over this ordeal.

Let's keep our eyes and ears open and check our teen's activity from time to time. Hopefully we'll never be shocked like this family was.
