I am not a huge fan of so called baby furniture–like, at all. I honestly do not get the point of spending thousands of dollars on a matching crib, changing table, and dresser, most of which will only get a few years of use before it is either tossed or sold for a fraction of what it was originally purchased for. Plus, most of it is just so generic and boring looking. My son's nursery is outfitted with second-hand, thrifted, pre-existing and found furniture, and I absolutely love the look we've achieved. It is completely unique, fun, kid-friendly and quite stylish.

Window Seat Storage
When I was a little girl I longed for a window seat to curl up and read books in. Had Pinterest been around back then, I probably would've had one. This inexpensive DIY window seat is the perfect place to curl up for storytime and adds extra storage space for books, toys, etc. It looks super-sleek and can be outfitted to coordinate with any color scheme just by adding different pillows and fabrics.
Ditch the Standard Changing Table
Baby store changing tables are probably the nursery furniture items I dislike the most. Lots of babies grow out of them well before they turn two and then this expensive piece of furniture is rendered practically useless. Instead of buying an actual "changing table," use a book case or dresser and top it with a changing pad and cover. You may even already own something you can use for this purpose. I also love the idea of thrifting a piece of furniture and revamping it especially for your baby's room.
Think Outside the Box
I found a trunk similar to the one pictured from a seller on Craigslist and managed to haggle him down to just $20, long before I was even pregnant, and as our son's nursery started coming together, we realized it would be perfect for a little boy's room. We've always used ours to store the next season's clothes, but it would also make a perfect toy box. Did somebody say treasure chest?
Stylish Storage
You can use all varieties of super-stylish baskets as exposed storage in your little one's nursery — this is a great option if closet space is at a premium or you're like me and despise those silly character-covered diaper holders. You can mount wire baskets like the ones pictured here, or store some beautiful baskets filled with diapers, wipes, toiletries, etc. on a shelf or even under the crib sans crib skirt.
Not Your Mami's Rocker
There are some absolutely gorgeous rocking chairs on the market and even some unique options from shops like Etsy and Land of Nod, but you can also turn just about any armchair into a rocker, so don't feel limited to chairs labeled "nursery" or "baby." Check out this tutorial for turning an Ikea armchair into a rocker, for the basic steps.
Be Choosy & Don't Settle
Instead of feeling relegated to packs of jungle decals from the baby boxstore, spend some time curating items that you love from different places — flea markets, garage sales, antique stores and websites, included–to create a look that you love and will be able to grow with your child. There's nothing more stylish and original than a room filled with cherished items selected especially for the inhabitant–in this case, your precious baby.
