A 19-year-old Kansas woman miraculously gave birth to a healthy baby boy while she was in a medically induced coma. Abigail Unruh was stricken with the flu while she was seven months pregnant and had not been vaccinated. What she believed to be a common cold turned out to be a powerful flu that turned into pneumonia.
The mom-to-be was taken to Overland Park Regional Medical Center where doctors desperately tried to save her by putting her in a coma. The result was shocking!

Two days after her hospital admittance, Unruh gave birth–the natural way–which amazed doctors and Unruh's grandmother, Katherine. Unruh, who was STILL in a coma when little Douglas was born, reportedly went through the normal stages of labor and actually pushed.
Unruh had caught the H1N1 virus, known as the swine flu and was so sick to the point that she couldn't breathe and doctors had to place her on a ventilator. After the scary ordeal Katherine said, "There are no words to explain how incredible it is to see the two of them together."
The greater concern was that this was the teen's first child and he was only 34 weeks along when he decided to be born. Luckily the delivery was an easy process, but the new mother wasn't able to see her son for at least another two weeks due to her state. Unruh regrets her decision to not get a flu shot and urges others that they should sure to get vaccinated. "I think I will be getting my flu shot from now on that's for sure. I missed out on two weeks of my son's life. I missed out on actually giving birth to my son," she said.
This story is so scary! I'm glad that this new mom and son are doing well, but it's scary how strong the flu has become in recent years. I especially think pregnant women need to take care of themselves as much as possible because you are putting another life at risk when you don't. It's truly a miracle that Unruh and her baby turned out fine after she was close to death and he was born a month early. Hopefully this will teach her and other moms-to-be to get their flu shot.
