Part of being a woman is spending tons of money and tolerating the pain that comes with plucking, threading and waxing away unwanted hairs. But that's NOT the case for Mariam, a 49-year-old mother who has finally thrown in the towel when it comes to the uncontrollable facial hair that began growing shortly after she gave birth to her son 28 years ago. Mariam recently appeared on ITV's This Morning to talk about how her decision to grow out her beard has drastically affected her life. I'm not going to lie, I nearly cringed after seeing this woman's beard. But I have to give her props for bravely sporting this look and with so much confidence!

Mariam's facial hair battle began right after giving birth to her now 28-year-old son, most likely due to some sort of hormonal imbalance. The woman started plucking her hairs out one by one, EVERY single day for almost 20 years. It became such a serious obsession that it would take hours before she would leave the house. The 49-year-old had tests done to make sure she wasn't suffering from any serious health conditions and even had electrolysis, a permanent hair removal treatment, done 3 times and the hair just grew back. Holy cow!
After years of trying everything under the sun to remove those pesky pelos, Mariam decided to just grow it all out. It was in 2008, after her son had moved out and she found herself unemployed. She then started a blog where she would document her experiences as a woman living with a beard, but not everyone was supportive. Some where encouraging, others were so cruel they would tell her tell things like, "she should be sent to Russia or shot." Okay, that's just mean!
But even so, Mariam doesn't let it get to her. In fact, not only has she finally accepted her hairy self, but she claims she's "never felt sexier." After a decade of being single, she's hoping to find love in England where she's been doing circus acts.
As scary as I think this woman looks, I think it takes a very brave person to fully accept themselves—flaws and all. I don't think I'd even have the balls to leave my house with one little pelito on my chin, forget a whole beard. It's kind of refreshing to see someone love themselves regardless of what society may think. Even so, I'm still kind of hoping they come up with something to help her permanently remove that facial hair, in case she does wake up one morning and realize she's totally over it.
