Sandy Hook shooting hero Victoria Soto may get hometown school named after her

In the wake of the Sandy Hook shooting tragedy, schools around the nation have been trying to beef up security on their campuses. But Stratford, Connecticut's mayor proposed renaming one of the town's schools in honor of Victoria Soto, the now-famous hero teacher at Sandy Hook elementary school, who died while trying to protect her students from shooter, Adam Lanza.

The 27-year-old was raised and lived in Stratford and her heroism has now influenced her hometown to name a school after the beloved teacher.

This is a really thoughtful and great way to commemorate a special soul lost that tragic day. The Sandy Hook shooting was one of the darkest day our nation faced and many families lost loved ones. But heroes such as Vicki Soto were acknowledged as they lost their lives bravely and safely for the sake of the children.

According to NBC Connecticut, a new school building will be constructed at the Honeyspot Elementary school this summer and will then be named after Soto. The mayor of Stratford, John Harkins met with Soto's parents proposing the idea and recalls how strong and resilient the family has been since the tragedy.

Before any official name changes are made, Harkins needs to meet to get the approval of the town council which will occur on January 14. Let's hope this falls through!

Vicki Soto was a brave young woman who deserves to be honored this way. I'm glad to hear her hometown is doing something to remember someone who was willing to put her life on the line to save her students. Our thoughts are with the Soto family and the other victims of the shooting. We also hope that the town council approves renaming the school to honor the devoted teacher.
