If you're a working mom, you probably spend part of your time trying to figure out how to achieve the ever elusive work-life balance. As a mom of two little kids, one of which is not yet in school full-time, I personally find this balance extremely difficult to obtain. However, I consider myself one of the lucky working moms because I get to work from home, which means I have a lot more flexibility than other working moms–and, for that, I'm extremely grateful.
If you just had a baby, you're thinking about going back and you're willing to change careers, here are six careers you might want to look into that might help you have more of that work-life balance so many of us moms are always looking for.
Photographer
Turn your hobby into your job. If you love taking pictures and you've been told you have a good eye, consider photography as your next career. One area that is pretty lucrative and highly popular is maternity, birth and baby photography. You choose when, where and how much to charge per session and images. What could be more flexible than that?
Sonographer
My father-in-law went back to school a few years ago to become a sonogram technician and he couldn't be happier. Not only does he get to deliver great news to expecting parents, but he also has a lot of flexibility and makes a pretty penny in the process.
Freelance writer/blogger
I'll be honest, this is more the writer part than the blogger part. I mean, you can make a living as a blogger, but you have to be at it for a while before that starts happening. However, if you're already a writer, there are tons of freelancing opportunities for you out there in the blogosphere. Although not all blogs pay their freelance writers equally, if you can get several writing gigs, you should be ok.
Teacher
The best part of being a teacher and a mom has to be the schedule. You pretty much have the same schedule as your children and you get to take all days off and breaks, including summer, with them.
Zumba instructor
Imagine the fun? I know it's a stereotype to think that all Latinas know how to dance, but if you do and you enjoy it, this can be an incredible and flexible opportunity. Not to mention the amount of calories you'll be burning and the example you'll be giving your little ones!
Doula
Although I didn't have one with either of my two children, I've heard wonderful stories from those who did. My hypnobirthing instructor was a doula and she just seemed super passionate and knowledgeable about her job. Image the thrill of helping bring a baby into the world? Powerful, don't you think?
Translator
If you're bilingual like many of us mamás latinas are, becoming a translator is something you might want to consider. Before I had to go back to work full-time after my second child was born, I did a lot of freelance translations from home! I usually charged by the word and while not all the jobs were huge, there were some that took me longer, but left me with a bigger paycheck.
Dental hygienist
This is high-paying and in-demand job that affords you a lot of flexibility as the majority of dental hygienists work part-time.
Home daycare owner
If you really like kids and you have a lot of patience, opening your own home daycare can be a good idea. I mean, you're already taking care of your little one, so you'd just be adding to that by accepting two or three more kids around your child's age. It'll be fun for them and, in a way, easier to keep all of them entertained. Plus, you'll be doing a great service to a lot of moms who, like me, don't really like the idea of regular daycares.
Graphic designer
If know several moms who make a living thanks to their graphic designer skills and they're able to do it from home and under their own terms. With so many outlets (like Etsy and eBay) to share your designs out there, it shouldn't be that hard to let others know about your talents if you really set your mind to it.
