Turns out that the Aztecs knew what many in current times are just beginning to learn: Chia seeds are a healthy addition to your diet. Chia or Salvia hispanica is believed to have originated in Central America where it was a staple of the Aztec diet. So why are chia seeds having a moment right now? Well, emerging research shows that…
- Chia seeds are an excellent source of omega-3 fatty acids.
- Chia seeds have 10 grams of fiber per ounce (about 2 tablespoons).
- Chia seeds contain protein, iron, calcium, magnesium, and zinc.
Since chia seeds are a high source of fiber, they can help curb your appetite because they will keep you feeling full longer. Nice! An added benefit is that chia seeds do not have to be ground and do not go rancid. So how do you incorporate this Aztec staple in to your diet? Luckily, chia seeds are very flexible:
- Eat chia seeds raw.
- Sprinkle ground or whole seeds on cereal, yogurt, rice, or vegetables.
- Enjoy a chia fresco, a drink popular in Mexico, which is made by soaking chia seeds in fresh fruit juice or water.
- Add them to hot oatmeal or Farina.
- Add chia sprouts to salads or sandwiches.
