Want to make your home smell amazing before your next holiday dinner party, but prefer not to use chemical-laden canned air fresheners and candles? I have the perfect solution for you!

To make your home smell warm and cozy, all you have to do is fill up a pot with water and some amazing smelling natural ingredients that you probably already have on hand and let simmer all day. Even better, when the day is done, you can just jar everything up and use it again the next day. Check out my favorite DIY air freshener recipes for Christmas below.

These are the ingredients you will need.

  • Peels from a few apples
  • Cinnamon (sticks work much better)

  • Maple or vanilla extract

Place all the ingredients in a saucepan.

Fill a medium saucepan with the ingredients, cover with water, and simmer over a low flame for as long as desired. The mixture can be stored in the fridge and reused for two days. The same method can be used with a number of other ingredients to create custom scents.

Orange is another great ingredient to create natural scents for the home.

Get some cranberries and enjoy the smell of Christmas in your home.

In a saucepan with water, place a handful of cranberries, sage (dried or fresh), and some slices of orange or lemon. Simmer over a low flame and enjoy the delicious scent.

Ginger and vanilla make the perfect combination.

Place some vanilla (extract or pod) and ginger (fresh or ground) in a saucepan with water and simmer.

No matter what ingredients you use, once you know how to do it, it's really up to your imagination and personal preferences. Just remember to turn the stove off before you leave the house and to keep the fire low so the water doesn't evaporate.

Now, sit back and enjoy the great smell!
