5 Bright makeup tips for Latinas with darker skin

I'm so tired of hearing women with medium or darker complexions telling me they can't pull off certain makeup colors. The fact that I still know naturally tanned chicas who think they can't rock red lipstick is completely absurd to me. It's actually quite the opposite. The darker your skin tone, the bolder and brighter you can go with your makeup. Yes, that means cobalt blue eyeliners, emerald shadows, hot pink lipstick and tangerine lipsticks–the works! There's just a few things you need to know beforehand to perfectly pull them off!

Bright makeup looks especially nice against olive, tan or brown skin tones. So don't even think about shying away from bright, bold and beautiful shades like fuschia, pink, red or even blue. Ever noticed how striking celebs like Beyonce, Joan Smalls or Lupita Nyong'o look with bright makeup shades. They rock the heck out of them! Here are five ways to make sure you get it right!

Prep bright lipsticks: Always make sure you prep your lips with a neutral base, especially if your lips are naturally darker. A lot of celebrity makeup artists like applying a thin layer of concealer or foundation first. Cle De Peau Concealer ($70) usually does the trick for me. You can also apply a little on your eyelids too to help your eye shadow color pop.

Use a cream formula: For a nice, natural looking flush, I apply a bright cream-based blush to my cheeks. It leaves a soft, stained finish on a darker complexion. Try Bobbi Brown Pot Rouge for Lips & Cheeks in Raspberry ($27).

Use a makeup sponge: For a more even looking complexion, I always apply my foundation, concealer, brush and even bronzer using a makeup sponge, like The Beauty Blender ($20).

Find the perfect red: Anyone can pull off red lipstick. It's all about finding one that compliments your complexion and undertones. Or just look for a universal shade, like MAC Lipstick in Ruby Woo ($16).

Use matte formulas: When it comes to lipstick, I'd steer away from shimmery ones and opt for matte formulas. They usually contain better pigments and look better against darker complexions. I'm obessed with NARS Lipstick in Funny Face ($26).
