3 Ways exfoliating your scalp will help your hair grow

I can't wait to tell you how scalp exfoliation can you get you the long, flowing tresses you've been dreaming of. If you've been attempting to grow your hair out for months or even years and you've made little to no progress, or have gained some length but are currently experiencing a plateau, there's one super simple beauty you may not have tried–scalp exfoliation. We all know exfoliation can work wonders for our skin, especially during the colder months when skin tends to dry out easily thanks to harsh winds and dry indoor heat, but most of us don't think about our scalps all that often–feet, knees and faces, sure. Scalps, not so much. But there are tons of benefits to scalp exfoliation including hair growth.

Stimulates the follicle. The process of exfoliating involves gentle massaging, which will stimulate the hair follicle. Massage increases blood flow, which brings inactive follicles back into an active growth state.

Better nourishment. Exfoliating removes residue and buildup from your scalp allowing the nutrients and moisturizers from your hair products to penetrate the root. Just as with the rest of your body, these nutrients will make for a healthier scalp and healthier hair, which will allow it to grow and flourish.

Prevents hair loss. An unhealthy scalp can exacerbate hair loss. Since exfoliation promotes a healthy scalp, it will help you hold on to the strands you already have, so while you're growing your hair out, the existing hair will appear thicker, fuller, and healthier.

To really boost hair growth potential, try exfoliating two to three times a week for the next month or so, then at least once a month when you've noticed a difference. There are commercial products available for scalp exfoliation, many of which are naturally derived, but can be costly. Try these easy and inexpensive DIY version to get started right away:

1/4 Cup Olive Oil

1/4 Cup Brown Sugar*

Combine ingredients and gently massage into your scalp before or after shampooing. If you want to retain some of the moisture from the olive oil, do it after shampooing but before conditioning and rinsing. Rinse thoroughly with warm water.

* Note: These are starting measurements, adjust the amounts up or down as needed depending on your hair length.
