At the beginning of September I went #nopoo. And just in case you are like my husband and have no idea what I'm talking about, no I am not constipated and in need of prune juice. What I and my very regular bowels have done is follow in the sudless footsteps of many before us and given up shampooing my hair. As of September 1st, I have not shampooed my hair and I have no intention of ever shampooing again.
Does that mean my hair is a greasy, oily, disgusting, matted mess with fruit flies buzzing around it because I haven't cleaned it in weeks? Absolutely not, I've totally cleaned my hair, I just haven't used shampoo and it's feeling and looking better than it has in a very long time. Let me tell you what I've been doing.

You've probably heard that the stuff in shampoo that makes the suds everyone loves is actually not good for your hair and is really the reason why you need conditioner. I've known this for a long time and I have stayed away from shampoos that have sodium lauryl sulfate (the sudsy stuff) and other questionable ingredients in them. I'm the kind of person that reads labels because I care about that stuff.
So most of the timeI bought organic shampoos with supposedly nothing toxic in them. Once when I was feeling flush, I even plunked down money for WEN Hair Care, which I love, but it's too expensive of a habit for me to keep up. Then I saw that so many people were going #nopoo: giving up shampoo and replacing it with either nothing or baking soda and apple cider vinegar. Dude, I can totally afford nothing or baking soda and apple cider vinegar.
I tried doing nothing about six months ago, which just consisted of rinsing my hair whenever I showered and I'll be honest, I did not love it so I went back to "poo." Then at the beginning of September I realized that I already had baking soda in my bathroom because I use it to exfoliate my face on occasion, so why not use it to clean my hair and see if I like it?
So here's how I clean my hair now.
1. I take about two tablespoons of baking soda and mix it with water then kind of pour it into the roots of my hair, massage it through my scalp and hair, then rinse with water.
2. I take about two tablespoons of apple cider vinegar that I keep in my bathroom because it doesn't have to be refrigerated and I mix it in a big plastic cup with about 16 ounces of water. I rinse my hair with it and let it work its way through.
3. I give my hair one last rinse with water and that's it!
My hair feels great, it's not oily and it doesn't even smell like vinegar. It's only been a few weeks, but it really does seem healthier. Also, I have curly hair and my curls are looking good if I may say so myself. I really don't think I'll ever go back to shampooing my hair again.
