7 Latina beauty hacks that save time & money

If YouTube or TikTok existed when our mothers were growing up, I'm pretty sure most of them would have been successful beauty bloggers. Think about it. If your mom was anything like mine, chances are she never dreamed of spending her hard earned money on expensive beauty items from MAC or Sephora. 'Stás loca? No, our mothers — and their mothers before them — had a million beauty hacks up their sleeves, many of which required the use of cheapo, dollar store beauty products. And that's not even the best part! Aside from saving you time, money, and counter space, most of mami's beauty hacks produced better results than name brand items. Wow, I guess that means mami really does know best!

From haircare to skincare, to everything in between, Latina mothers know best when it comes to solving these seven beauty problems on a budget.

Get your glow on!

No lotion, no problem. Dab a small amount of Vaseline onto your cheekbones and under your eyes to perfect a natural, dewy glow. And at night, apply a small amount of the jelly to a cotton swab and smooth it over your face to remove makeup and soften skin, in one shot.

Make your blowout last.

Mami's secret to a long-lasting blowout: Wrap your hair right and tight before you go to bed at night. To do it yourself, part straightened hair down the middle of your head. Take a section of hair from the nape of your neck and smooth it up towards the front of your head using a paddle brush; pin hair in place as you go along. Continue wrapping hair around the front of your head, back towards your nape. Repeat with the next section of loose hair. To set, spray your hair with a moisturizing spray, and cover your finished doobie with a netted cap. Now go to sleep, linda!

Relieve dry itchy scalp.

Coconut oil

Coconut oil was the hardest working beauty product in my household. We used it on our nails, on our skin, and even in our recipes. I swear! But most of all, we used the super oil to smooth down flyaways and relieve our itchy dry scalps, especially during the winter. The sweet smell and added sheen was just a nice bonus.

Get stubble-free legs.

Hair conditioner doubles as shaving cream in a pinch. In fact, its smooth, thin texture protects your legs from nicks and cuts, and the added moisturizers do wonders for your skin. Win-win!

De-puff puffy eyes.

My mother used to rub witch hazel, a natural anti-inflammatory herbal astringent, on our bruises to relieve the swelling. And as I got older, she let me in on a little secret: it works just as well on puffy, under-eye bags. Thanks, ma. I got the hint!

Oil-free lipsticks are great multitaskers. Dab a bit onto the apples of your cheeks, and voilá! You have a natural-looking blush!

Get shinier strands.

Beer does the body good! Well, at least it gives your hair added body and bounce. Cerveza is full of nutrients that can help repair damaged hair, all while giving a boost in volume. Also, the natural sugars found in beer help to tighten strands’ cuticles, making your hair appear super lustrous.
