7 Steps to prep for your first Brazilian wax

So I recently had my  first Brazilian wax ever. Don't get me wrong, I've been rocking a hairless vagina for years, but it's been with the help of razors. The idea of having a random person inflicting pain down there seemed unbearable and mortifying. But the constant shaving was starting to cause scars and ingrown hairs that wouldn't exactly complement the teeny tiny bikinis I plan on rocking this summer. So I finally decided to give it a shot and I'm happy to report, it wasn't all that bad. Everything was left as smooth and soft as a baby's bottom. But I'm pretty sure my prepping had a lot to do with it.

Mujeres, when it comes to getting your first Brazilian wax, prep is key. I'm sure you're anticipating pain, but getting full frontal for a complete stranger can be just as intimidating. So to help ease your nerves, check out a few of my prepping tips below. Believe me, it'll be all worth it in the end!

Grow it out: I'm just warning you, if your hair is too short to remove with wax they might just send you home. Try growing it out for two or three weeks. It should be at least one quarter of an inch long.

Pop a pill: Take an over-the-counter painkiller like acetaminophen or ibuprofen 45 minutes before your appointment. It not only helps reduce the pain but it helps prevents any inflammatory side effects.

Don't get waxed right before your period: The worst thing you could do is get a Brazilian wax RIGHT before your period because your skin is a lot more sensitive when you're PMSing. Try going at least five days before or just wait another week. I don't think I need to tell you to not get one during your period …

Dress comfortably: You're going to feel kind of raw and sensitive after your wax job, so you want to make sure you're wearing super soft underwear and loose, comfortable clothing. Jeans are NOT a good option.

Mentally prepare for the pain: It's definitely going to hurt, but remember since it's your first time, it's going to be more painful than usual because your hairs are still thick and strong. Make sure to let your waxer know if you want to go totally bare or if you rather she leave a little "landing strip" right down the middle. Ask the spa professional who's doing your wax to tell you when she'll be pulling so you can breathe out as the hair is coming off–just like labor breathing techniques, this method really works!

Don't feel awkward: First they'll tell you to undress and give you either a towel or robe to cover down there before they get started. Then they'll ask you to lay and spread your legs wide. Try to relax girl, the person doing your waxing is a professional and therefore, more focused on your hair than on how you look naked.

Don't get physical after: The last thing you want to do is engage in physical activities immediately afterwards. And that means sex too chica! You're going to be sore and sensitive for at least day. So take it easy!
