Dove’s “Real Beauty Sketches” prove women are much more beautiful than we think

Forensic artist Gil Zamora's sketched women for Dove's inspiring new "You're More Beautiful Than You Think" videos and proved that we are generally very critical of ourselves, especially when it comes to how we look. This new, inspiring Dove campaign aims to change our perception of ourselves to reflect reality.

I have to admit, the message in this video really does ring true. It hit home and left me surprisingly emotional. You have to watch it to really understand why…

The video shows Zamora with a drafting board sketching in a warehouse with his back facing a different woman, as she describes to him her facial features. He can't see them so he's drawing based on how they described themselves. The women start to blurt out phrases like:

"I'm already starting to get little crows feet and stuff like my mom has."
"My mom told me I had a big jaw."
"I kind of have a fat rounder face."

The women had no idea what was going on, but they also spent some time with strangers earlier in the day. After having their sketches done based on their own descriptions, the same strangers were asked to describe the woman they saw earlier. Then the two drawings were hung side-by-side so each woman could see the differences, and believe me when I say–they were pretty drastic.  Some of the women even teared up when observing the two different versions of themselves. It just goes to show that we are all way too critical about the way we look and where we might see imperfections, others see beauty.

The truth is, our harsh perceptions of ourselves affect everything in our lives. It made me realize myself that I really need to be more appreciative of all the wonderful things my body can do and embrace my natural beauty. I definitely stress over minor imperfections ALL the time.

So remember chicas, the next time you look in the mirror smile, because you are DEFINITELY more beautiful than you think.
