8 Tips for clear and perfectly healthy skin

If you're suffering from acne, don't worry you're not alone! Around 54 percent of women over the age of 25 suffer from adult acne. What causes it? Sebum, an oily substance that's produced by the skin's sebaceous glands clogs pores and attracts bacteria that causes you to break out. Many women experience acne during or after pregnancy, perimenopause, or menopause, and it's usually a result of a hormonal imbalance. While there isn't a one-size-fits-all cure for acne, there are definitely ways you can fight it. Check out a few of these skin rules that will help you banish the zits and keep your skin clear!

Keep your skin clean

One of the most important steps in preventing your skin from breaking out is cleansing regularly. Dirt and makeup causes free radicals to attack your skin which can lead to acne. Make sure to wash you face every morning, night and after work outs with a gentle cleanser, like Cetaphil Gentle Skin Cleanser ($5).

Try over-the-counter products

Look for products that contain ingredients like benzoyl peroxide or salicylic acid. I love Boscia Clear Complexion Treatment with Botanical Blast ($35).

Use a dark-spot treatment

Use a spot treatment that contains ingredients like glycolic acid and tea tree leaf extracts, like Murad Post Acne Spot Lightening Gel ($60), to help fade dark spots and acne scars over time.

See a dermatologist

If over the counter products aren’t working for you, try making an appointment to see a dermatologist who can provide you with a prescription topical medication, in-office treatments, or even oral contraceptives that can help balance your hormones.

Don't pop

Picking at and popping your pimples always does more damage than good. It causes bacteria to spread resulting in inflammation and even scarring. Keep your hands away from the zits!

Protect your skin

You should always be wearing sunscreen, but acne products many times make skin more sensitive and susceptible to sun damage. Always use a non-greasy moisturizer that contains SPF 30 or higher. Try Philosophy Hope Oil Free Moisturizer SPF 30 ($40).

Drink water

Drinking plenty of water helps flush your system, getting rid of waste and toxins that can cause acne. Try drinking at least 6 to 8 full glasses of water a day.

De-stress

Stress causes our adrenal glands to increase production of hormones which increase oil production and can lead to acne. Put aside some time for activity that’s going to help you unwind, whether it’s meditating, yoga or working out.
