I love the way a good lipstick can easily pull a look together. But did you know that some of these lip formulas contain lead in them? The folks over at Good Morning America investigated which lipsticks include this chemical, which can potentially be so harmful (it's been blamed for nerve damage and a decrease intelligence in developing kids!). The team sent out around 22 different lipsticks and glosses to a cosmetics lab called Underwriter Laboratories for lead testing and discovered that 12 out of the 22 lipsticks contained lead. That's 55 percent!

Scarier still, there seems to be some speculation as to whether or not pregnant women can pass the lead from these lipsticks to their unborn babies, but it still hasn't been completly proven. However, if you want to stay on the safe side, consider switching to an organic lipstick. There are a ton of great eco-friendly lipsticks out there in a ton of amazing colors that don't include any harmful ingredients in them like lead. Check out a few of my favorites below!

Jane Iredale
The Jane Iredale PureMoist Lipcolour ($20) is a vegan, gluten and cruelty-free formula that includes natural ingredients like castor oil, jojoba oil, beeswax, and grape seed extract to keep lips fully hydrated and to help keep your color long-lasting. This pretty pink shade is great if you’re looking for a subtle and natural-looking color.
Vapour Organic Beauty
I love how this Vapour Organic Beauty Siren Lipstick ($22) contains hydrating myrrh, rose buds and healing lemon balm to protect lips from moisture loss and environmental damage. This chemical-free lipcolour also comes in a wide range of shades. The deep red shade called Intuition is a perfect pick now for the holidays.
Nvey Eco’s
The vitamin E, safflower, beeswax and castor oil found in Nvey Eco’s Organic Lipstick ($29) soothes, hydrates, and nourishes lips, leaving them smooth, moisturized and full of long-lasting color.
Hemp Organics
Hemp Organics Lipstick ($14) uses only natural pigments derived from the earth itself to bring you beautiful, natural-looking colors. This certified organic formula uses no petroleum-derived dyes that tend to contribute to dry and crack lips. Organic beeswax, candelilla, organic hemp seed oil along with other plant waxes work to seal in moisture and provide a rich color that lasts for hours.
Earth's Beauty
Shea and aloe vera extract are packed in Earth’s Beauty Shea & Aloe Lipstick ($15) to keep lips healthy and hydrated. This is definitely a good one to have during the cold, winter months.
