13-year-old dies after eating a single bite of peanut butter, proves food allergies must be taken seriously!

I have always tried to be mindful of peanut bans in my daughter's school, but I never knew the real dangers of not respecting them until I read about 13-year-old Natalie Giorgi. The poor girl took ONE bite of a Rice Krispie treat without knowing it was made with peanut butter and although she spit it out as soon as she realized what was going on, it was too late. Natalie had an allergic reaction and even her dad who's a doctor wasn't able to help her. She was pronounced dead at the hospital Friday night.

I can't even imagine the heartache her parents must have felt as they saw their young daughter go into cardiac arrest about 20 minutes after she took a bite of the deadly snack. But now the Giorgis want to make sure others are aware of the dangers of food allergies as they announced in a statement they shared after their daughter's tragic death:

While our hearts are breaking over the tragic loss of our beautiful daughter Natalie, it is our hope that others can learn from this and realize that nut and food allergies are life threatening. Caution and care for those inflicted should always be supported and taken.

I, for one, will never ever take a peanut ban at my daughter's school lightly. I've often wondered how necessary they really are and kind of complained a bit because I've felt so restricted in terms of the snacks I could send in her lunchbox. But after reading about Natalie, I feel like a total jerk!

Not only will I be extra careful, but I'll make sure both my kids know about Natalie and the importance of respecting and protecting those whose lives could be in danger because of food allergies.
