Barbie unveils 2020 ‘Día de Muertos’ doll & it is gorgeous

Toy maker Mattel has just released a brand-new Barbie doll celebrating Mexican culture, and fans are going nuts for it. Photos of the 2020 Barbie Signature Día De Muertos Collector Doll were posted on the Barbie Twitter account on September 2, and less than a week later, the stunning dolls are completely sold out.

The doll was released just in time to kick off Hispanic Heritage Month in September, and Día de los Muertos will be celebrated next month as well. The doll honors the Mexican holiday, which recognizes lost loved ones in a two-day celebration involving wearing traditional garments, visiting cemeteries, playing music, and spending time with family and friends. Of course, it is perhaps best recognized by the intricate calavera face painting that has been depicted on the Día de Muertos Barbie.

The doll's details are amazing.

Perhaps the most intriguing feature of the new Día de Muertos Barbie is her face. The doll's face has been intricately painted in the calavera style. The toy company used shades of white, blue, red, and gold to decorate the doll's tan face in the sugar skull style, and it's almost too pretty to look away. She's also wearing a beautiful flower crown and large gold earrings, adding to the authenticity of her styling.

Then there's the dress.

Completing the look is the doll's traditional Mexican attire. She's wearing a long white gown with a delicate lace overlay and colorful embroidered floral insets and pearl details. It is jaw-droppingly gorgeous. Her hair is also styled in a traditional braided updo.

Mattel seems to have spared no effort when it comes to the doll's details, saying it's a "tribute to the customs of families around the world." A closer look reveals tiny hearts in the calavera painting, making it still feel true to the Barbie brand and appropriate for children.

The box even depicts an ofrenda.

Keeping true to its theme, the box the doll comes in depicts an ofrenda—the altar where photos of deceased loved ones and offerings are placed during the Día de los Muertos celebration. The background shows colorful papel picado and family photos.

It's being sold on eBay.

The 2020 Día de Muertos Barbie is a collectible and retails for $75, but since it has sold out, the only way to get your hands on one currently is by buying it on eBay, where it is selling for $150. That's right—you'll pay double if you want it right now as opposed to waiting for Mattel to release more.

Mattel has made a 'dia' doll before.

This isn't the first time Mattel has produced a Día de los Muertos themed doll. The company released one in December 2019 that featured a completely different look from the 2020 version, marked by a black colorway and a more playful look than this year's graceful and delicate doll. It's currently available on Amazon for $220, so if that's any indication, the new doll may be a commodity for quite some time.
