1. What five places would you like to travel to?
This question taps into kids' sense of adventure – some of their picks might surprise you! Plus, you never know if there's a place in their list that you might actually be able to visit as a family.
2. If you could invite any person to dinner, who would it be?
This conversation will give some insight about the types of role models your kids look up to. They might not even pick anyone famous or noteworthy, just someone from their everyday life whom they admire. Go around the car and talk about what kind of dinner party you would have if everyone's invited guests attended!
3. If you were principal of your school, what three things would you change?
Maybe they would enact a "No Homework" policy, or change the dress code, or have a pizza lunch served every day of the week, or start the school day later, or have an earlier dismissal, or longer recess, or cookies and milk every afternoon…really, the possibilities are endless.
4. If you could have a superpower, what would it be?
Flying and invisibility are two popular choices, but the sky's the limit when kids' imaginations are involved. The answer might even give you some insight about their confidence level. Keep the conversation going by discussing other "superpowers" or even regular personality traits they wish they possessed.
5. Would you rather live close to the beach, close to the mountains, or in a big city?
Have them go into detail about why they would make their choice. What challenges and benefits exist in each place? What would family life be like? Would there be different opportunities than they currently have? This chat might take you down a path of your kids' goals and dreams, too.
