Curly Qs: How can I make my own protein treatment for damaged curly hair?

Curly Q: I've been hearing so much about protein treatments lately and how they're amazing for repairing damaged curly hair. But I can't seem to find one within my budget. Are they any all-natural protein treatments out there I can try at home?

There are a ton of great protein treatments out there, like Aubrey All-Natural GPB Balancing Protein Conditioner ($11). But a lot of them tend to be pricey and I haven't heard of any that work better than a good ol' fashion DIY protein treatment. For years the Dominican women in my family have been using a super simple homemade protein treatment made with ingredients you can easily find in your kitchen to help strengthen and nourish their strands. These treatments work wonders especially if you're struggling with heat-damaged curls.

Once a month I like to do an all-natural protein hair strengthening mask. All you need is an egg and some coconut oil–that's it! Egg yolk is rich in protein and omega-3 fatty acids which helps restore hair's health. Coconut oil moisturizes, nourishes and also boosts shine. The two help to repair damage and also bring bounce back to curls. Check out how I do it!

What you need:

1 egg

2 tablespoons of coconut oil

What to do:

  1. I add one egg to a small bowl and then add about 2-3 tablespoons of coconut oil (depending on how dry and damaged my hair is at the moment).
  2. Beat the egg with the coconut oil and then apply to dry, dirty hair. Make sure to especially add to the ends of your curls (which are the oldest and driest part of your hair).
  3. After applying the treatment, cover your head with a shower cap. I use one of those plastic ones you can find at any local beauty supply or 99 cent store. Depending on how damaged or dry your curls are, you can leave the treatment on anywhere from 30 minutes to an hour.
  4. Make sure to rinse out with cool or lukewarm water. Not hot! Then wash and style as usual.

Wasn't that simple? To help restore damaged hair, trying doing this treatment at least once a month!
