Luis Miguel's relationship with his daughter, Michelle Salas, had quite the rocky start, and it's been fodder for public speculation for decades. People will forever be interested because Luis Miguel was estranged from his firstborn for years after her birth in 1989, but they eventually got reacquainted when she was older. Michelle is the result of a relationship he had with Stephanie Salas at the height of his career in the 1980s, when the pair were quite young. Although they never exclusively dated, they were bound together forever through their baby girl.
The "La Bikina" singer was not in contact with his daughter for years, and when she was a teenager, Michelle called her father out in an interview and demanded answers as to why he turned his back on her for so long. Many believe that it was that interview that inspired the "Si Nos Dejan" singer to reconnect with her after so many years.

Details about the story between Michelle's mom and the singer were revealed in the first season of Luis Miguel: La Serie, which came out in 2018. The show chronicles El Sol de Mexico's life from when he was just a boy, and it addresses how his relationship with Stephanie started. Even before the series, though, Michelle's relationship with her dad made headlines over the years, with many speculating about whether or not he would ever recognize her as his daughter. Spoiler alert: He has, and scientifically there is no denying it. Let's take a look at Luis Miguel and Michelle's complicated relationship throughout the years.
Stephanie became a single mom at 19.
After being involved with the singer in the late 1980s, Stephanie welcomed Michelle on June 13, 1989. Although Luis wasn't always part of the baby's life, Stephanie relied on the full support of her mother, Sylvia Pasquel, and grandmother, Silvia Pinal, to raise her first daughter.
Michelle had a happy childhood with her mom by her side.
Michelle grew up with just her mom's side of the family, but has repeatedly said she lacked nothing during her childhood thanks to them. The model credits her mom for raising her and giving her a good life.
Michelle found out who her dad was when she was just a toddler.
"I was around 3 years old, the exact age I don't remember," she said. "My mom told me when she considered that I had a conscience to understand things. It was strange, but at the same time I understood that I had to know sooner or later. When you're young, you don't get it."
Michelle had a relationship with her dad until she was 6 years old.
Stephanie revealed that LuisMi was involved in Michelle's life from the time she was 3 months old up until she was 6. "He was present, and our relationship was beautiful and intense, but I was always sure that his priority was his career, his albums and his concerts," she told ¡Hola! magazine in February 2018.
Michelle's great-grandmother revealed she wrote LuisMi a letter.
Silvia Pinal revealed in an interview with Hoy that she wrote the singer a letter, which she had delivered to him through one of his friends, in which she urged him to reconnect with her great-granddaughter. "Yes, I did give him a letter," she said when asked about it. "But I don't know how much it accomplished, because I haven't seen him, and I don't care to, and I'm not interested. But I did like that he was in contact with Michelle because that's what I was interested in."
When Michelle was 16, she opened up about her dad for the first time.
Michelle made a public plea for her dad to reconsider how he had treated her throughout her life during a 2005 interview Quién magazine. She revealed that she stopped seeing him when she was 6, and said she wished he was more understanding of her feelings since he also didn't come from a stable family. "I'm not asking for a whole life," she said. "I just want him to give me five minutes so he can explain his reasons to me. For him to tell me what happened and that's it!"
She revealed people treated her differently because of her parents.
In the interview with Quién, she said people would look at her and whisper secrets about her because of who her father was. She said she has had to fight to separate herself from being just "Luis Miguel's daughter."
Michelle even commented on her dad's relationship with Aracely Arámbula.
Luis started dating the actress in 2005, and in an interview that same year, Michelle expressed her feelings about the relationship. "She definitely hasn't been one of his best," Michelle said. "I didn't know anything about her other than her being on the show Amigas y Rivales and it wasn't until I saw her on Quién that I knew who she was. Let's just say I don't have a comment. I'm not interested in meeting her and I don't care for it."
LuisMi and the actress had two sons together.
Aracely was rumored to be expecting her first child with the singer at the time of the interview. When they asked Michelle about it, she said: "I hope not. It would be tough if my dad has another daughter."
Michelle then moved in with Aracely and her dad in Los Angeles.
It was later believed that Aracely was the one to urge Luis Miguel to reconnect with his firstborn, and he did. Michelle left Mexico and moved to LA to live with her dad, Aracely, and her two younger siblings.
She finally got his last name.
In 2011, it was reported that LuisMi had officially given his daughter his last name and she was now legally Michelle Gallego Salas. Still, even if he did give her his last name at long last, she's known as Michelle Salas.
The genetic link between Luis and Michelle was confirmed.
LuisMi legally recognized Michelle as his daughter in 2007. He was 37 years old at the time and she was 18. There was a paternity test involved that pretty much made it impossible for him or anyone else to deny that Michelle is indeed his daughter and always has been.
He gave his daughter one of his homes.
Basta! reported that she was listed as the owner of one of his former properties in Quartz Hill, in Los Angeles, California, valued at $108 million, since September 2009. That's when it was reported that her legal name had changed and she was using her father's last name because that's what was used in the documents.
A few months after Michelle was born, Luis Miguel said that as far as he knew, he wasn't a father.
Veronica Castro interviewed Luis Miguel in 1989 and point blank asked him if he had any kids. He acted like the whole thing was absurd and said that as far as he knew, he didn't have any kids. Hopefully, Michelle has never seen this clip because OUCH!
Michelle shocked everyone by sharing a pic with her father.
Michelle's Instagram is an absolute dream, with her insane vacation and fashion photos. But she made headlines when she posted a photo of herself with her famous dad for his birthday in April 2017, and thousands of likes poured in.
Stephanie opened up about Luis Miguel's reaction to her pregnancy news.
Almost 29 years after she welcomed her daughter, Stephanie opened up to ¡Hola! about her life and relationship with Luis Miguel. She revealed his reaction to finding out she was pregnant and had nothing bad to say about him. She claims he told her: "Don't worry, you'll never be without anything, because I will take care of it."
Yet, publicly Luis Miguel wasn't quite as gracious.
The singer appeared on Veronica Castro's talk show ¡Aquí Está! in 1989 and the host asked him about the rumors that he had a baby on the way. LuisMi deflected the question and said that if it was true, he wasn't aware of it yet.
Stephanie said she holds no grudges toward the singer.
She even said she is "infinitely grateful for giving me a daughter who is as marvelous, charismatic and beautiful as Michelle." How could she not be? The bond between Stephanie and Michelle appears to be very strong and full of mutual admiration and love.
Michelle opened up about how proud she was of her dad.
When it was revealed that the biographical series, Luis Miguel: La Serie, about the singer was being produced, Michelle said she was proud of her dad for sharing his story. "I am happy and very proud but I don't have anything to do with the series," she said during an interview. "I admire my dad a lot and I admire his story. I'm very happy that he wanted to do this."
Michelle shared the best advice her father has given her.
In July 2018, she opened up to Vanity Fair about what the best advice her dad has given her. "If you have discipline, it doesn't matter what you are or what you do," she said. "The key to success resides in the timing, the moment, and figuring out your own method."
She said everything was good between them.
She even gave insight into El Sol de México's private personality, saying he is "very human. Smiley, warm. The opposite of what he seems." It makes sense that he would be more relaxed in private than he is in public, especially since he's been famous for so long.
A couple of days after season two of 'Luis Miguel: La Serie' dropped, Michelle had some advice to share.
On April 20, 2021, Michelle posted a series of photos of herself on Instagram and wrote:
"Advice to be happy: don't listen to everything they tell you, don't believe everything you see and don't say everything you know ."
A lot of people assumed that was her reaction to the second season of her dad's series. If that's the case, it's not bad advice. You certainly can't take a dramatized version of someone's life as the actual reality of what happened.
Did a romance and pregnancy come between Michelle and Luis Miguel?
One of the topics that was covered in the second season of the Luis Miguel series has to do with an alleged romantic relationship between Michelle and Luis Miguel's good friend and then-manager Alejandro Asensi. The series alleges that around 2008, when Michelle was living with Luis Miguel, she got romantically close to Alejandro, who is 20 years her senior. There were even rumors of a pregnancy. Only they know what really went down, but soon thereafter, Alejandro and Luis Miguel stopped working together and ended what had been a close friendship. Supposedly, this caused a rift between Michelle and LuisMi as well.
Where do things stand between father and daughter now?
Since neither Luis Miguel nor Michelle have commented on the current state of their relationship, only they know. Hopefully, they are in a good place or working toward getting to a good place. Being estranged from your parent or child is emotionally painful. We wish them both well.
