Consider the clothing and accessories

When it comes to dressing your baby this summer, think about investing in heat and UV protectant gear and go for loose-fitting, breathable fabrics. Of course, don't forget the sunglasses and floppy hat. "Think of it as a layered approach," explained Dr. Trachtenberg about dressing an infant for summer conditions. "Even sunglasses are important because their eyes are so sensitive. They usually keep them on!" she added.

Apply and reapply sunscreen

"Six months and above is when sunscreen is recommended," says the New York City-based pediatrician. You want to find one that's broad spectrum and builds a barrier onto the skin so the chemicals in the product don't get absorbed into your baby's system. Dr. Trachtenberg  recommends reapplying sunscreen to your child/children at least once every 3 hours–especially after they've taken a dip in the water.

Keep skin soft

A baby's skin is sensitive and needs a mild cleanser to keep it smooth and healthy. Dr. Trachtenberg recommends using Dove Sensitive Skin Beauty Bar, which is hypoallergenic and unscented. "It doesn't strip the skin and you can use it from head-to-toe. It's also tear-free," she explained. The formulation has been used for decades and it has been proven to be safe for use on babies.

Bring a lightweight cotton blanket

Cotton is breathable and super easy to wash. Dr. Trachtenberg suggests adding it to your diaper bag as a go-to item that can easily shield your baby from the sun. "This way it's not tight and you can use it to shade them from the sun."

Cover them up as soon as possible

Another pro tip is not to wait until the last minute to put on sunblock. "One tip I always tell parents is to put the sunscreen on before you leave the house. You get that first coverage before you get to the beach or pool, so you know they're really protected," says Dr. Trachtenberg.
