We know ear piercings on babies is a hot topic, and while it's up to each parent, here are some tips to consider if you're planning to pierce your baby's ears.
Do you really want to do it?

Do you really want to get your baby's ears pierced or are you feeling pressured? If you aren't sure whether you want to put holes in your baby's ears, but the baby's abuela, tías and everyone in your familia is giving you grief, remember that you are the mamá and not them. Do what you feel is best.
Talk to your pediatrician

Your pediatrician can tell you when your baby's ears are big enough to get pierces and also what vaccines your baby needs before getting her ears pierced. There are even pediatricians who will do the piercing for you.
When should you do it?

If you pierce your baby's ears when they are too young to tug at the earrings or mess with the holes as they heel, then the chances of getting an infection are less. If you don't pierce your child's ears as an infant, you may want to wait until they are a tween or teen and will actually listen to you when you tell them to keep their hands their ears.
Will the earrings be a choking hazard?

Think about it, if your baby gets that earring off is it going to go into her mouth and get swallowed? You can get earrings with locks or screw-backs to minimize the risk.
Go for gold or surgical steel earrings

Some babies are allergic to certain metals so you want to err on the side of caution and go for gold or surgical steel.
Keloids may form

Swelling and a keloid formation may occur due to trauma in the skin's tissue. They tend to be genetic and can be removed with special treatment or surgery.
Watch for complications

Check and clean the area regularly. You also want to make sure the earring doesn't get embedded in the ear. That happens when the earring goes inside the hole and stays there.
