Many places, starting with travel agencies, offer discounts for children. Do your research and don't hesitate to ask lots of questions. Look for coupons, even in other countries they're starting to catch up to the beauty of them.

Engage them before you travel

Spark their interest and imagination before you leave home. Even going to see la abuela for the 20th time can include new things. Make sure to hear their suggestions and include some in your plans.

Involve them in packing

Make getting ready a drama-free event by allowing them to choose the clothes they will be bringing to the trip. If they are old enough, ask them to pack all their stuff in a carry-on and make them responsible for it. You will be surprised by how things change when they feel in charge.

Give them jobs

My children manage our smart devices better than we do, so it's easy to put them in charge of directions. Every small task will give your kids a sense of importance and will distract them from whinning.

Respect their times

You know your kids and their attention spans. Everybody gets tired after a few hours in a museum, or faster if it's not interactive. Foster their imagination with stories about the authors or the pieces, but don't push them. If your kids are under 5, don't be embarrased to let them rest in a stroller. It'll be better for all of you.

Be prepared for accidents

Kids who are over-excited and those who have different dietary needs are prone to them. Bring your first aid kit, their medications — I always travel with diarreah, allergy and pain medication, band aids and antibiotic cream. Also, bring wipes for spills. Accidents will happen, just be ready.

Always have food and toys available

Avoid sweets and candy if you can, but always have a snack for your kids in your bag. A drop in blood sugar levels or hunger can make anybody annoyed, more so a child. Also, for those times mostly enjoyed by adults, remember to bring some entertaiment for the little ones. It can be a toy or an app.

Set aside time to relax

Everybody, particularly kids, need time to just be. Don't over-schedule your trip and remember that down time is important for the brain to absorb everything and for the family to reconnect.

Include something fun every day

If you bring your children on vacation the idea is for them to have fun too. Don't expect them to be happy just looking at old buildings or visiting tía Eulalia. Plan something just for them every day, if you can. It can be as simple as just going to the playground.

Maintain a sense of routine

If your children love coloring at the end of the day, or snuggling in bed to read with you, do it while on vacation. The routine, specially the nighttime one, is important to help them relax and be rested for the next day's adventure.
