Bean matching game
This is a great game since they will be recognizing letters and matching them too. The Imagination Tree site suggests taking dry butter beans and writing letters with a black marker. Now take cupcake liners and do the same. Fit them into muffin tins and challenge your child to match each one while going over each letter and its phonetic sound.
The Lego alphabet matching game
What kid doesn't love Legos? This game is fun and super creative. Gather a few toys you have around the house and letter blocks that match the first letter the item starts with. Grab a stack of colorful Legos–two in each other. The goal is to place the set of the same color Legos next to the matching item and letter.
ABC hunt
Easter egg hunts may be the seasonal game to play now, but you can use that same idea and make it educational. Scatter ABC blocks around your house and encourage your kid to find them. Walk around with them and say the letters out loud as they pop up. Ask them to repeat the letter since this will help them have a visual and verbal association. Start with about ten letters at a time and work your way to all 26.
Play-dough letter mats
Learning needs to be fun for kids. I love this idea from the blog This Reading Mama. Print out free play-dough letter mats that include a letter and image. For example, P is for pizza. Then have your kid shape the letter with play-dough and place it on the paper. Super cute!
Chalk and rocks game
Getting dirty could be part of the fun too! Draw out letters with chalk and have your child outline it with rocks. This is a creative alternative to the workout books in the classroom.
Letter Jello hunt
This is fun, tasty and edible! Fill a cake or cup mold with a few plastic letters and cover with Jello. Once it's stirdy, serve it up for your kid to uncover all of the letters hidden within. Go over each letter and the sound it makes while they squish the Jello around…naturally.
ABC Cookie cutting session
A sweet snack could be a part of learning too! Bake a tray of sugar cookies and cut them out into letters of the alphabet. Go over the letters and sounds with your toddler while they enjoy some of the treats.
Grocery store letter find
Grab your shopping list and put it in alphabetical order. Then be sure to go down the line with your kid about what product starts with a specific letter. Challenge them to point out another item that begins with the same letter. The game will make food shopping more fun than usual for them!
Alphabet soup bath
Bathtime could also be a learning experience for a toddler. You can start introducing them to the alphabet with foam letters. A cute option is to turn it into a "making soup" process where they pick their favorite letters and then place them in a bowl. You can go over their sound one by one.
S is for singing
Sing out loud the alphabet and ask your child to sing along! S is for singing and D is for drums so make sure you review the basics in a musical tone. It will grab their attention and spark their creativity.
