You will never believe what some kids are doing to avoid bullying

I just read something that has left me quite disturbed. According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, the number of children who have undergone plastic surgery has increased 30 percent in the last decade … and the reason is difficult to swallow.

It turns out that more and more parents are turning to plastic surgery to prevent their children from becoming victims of bullying. Although we are mostly talking about the removals of large moles or scars that have caused others to make fun of them, the other surgery that's extremely common among children is pinning back protruding ears, like the ones in the photos above.

Luckily neither one of my children have been the victims of bullying. Of course, they are still very young and anything is possible. Even so, I doubt I'd be willing to submit to cosmetic surgery so they can avoid being harassed. I'm scared of unnecessary surgeries and the dangers of anesthesia and I would never forgive myself if anything happened to my children because of elective surgery.

Removing a mole or scar doesn't sound too bad, but surgery to fix the way a kid's ears look seems totally absurd. Children grow and change so much that I think it's pretty irresponsible to subject them to something so drastic as plastic surgery.

On the other hand, what kind of message are we sending to our children if we make them think everything has a solution? We all know that real life is not a walk in the park, that there are people cruel and spiteful everywhere and you just have to learn to deal with them or ignore them. And while that 's not always easy, it's a tool we must teach our children so they can survive in the real world.
