I am not in the habit of watching birthing videos. It's just not my thing. I realize that the birthing process is a beautiful thing, but I am prone to squeamishness. Today, however I did watch an incredibly intense birth video and I am both in shock and in awe. Now, I know how babies are born, I've had two of my own. Even in an "easy" birth there is nothing easy about it. It's work and I'm pretty sure that's why it's called labor. I had both of my babies in a hospital, but having babies at home or outside of hospitals is not something that shocks me. I think it's great when people have home births. This particular birth video does not take place in a hospital or a home. It happens creek-side in the Daintree forest in Australia, one of the oldest rain forests in the world. The mother, Simone, had home births before and she really wanted to have one in nature.

The video is over 20 minutes long, but covers hours worth of labor. I am beyond impressed that Simone has the generosity and confidence to share herself completely naked at a very vulnerable moment in her life with everyone on the internet. I'm sure some people will judge and I'm also sure that other people will be inspired.
I'm glad I watched it because it is something else to bring another human being into this world. It just goes to show how unbelievably powerful women are. We're amazing. Truly. I love that we have choices and I love that we are flexible. Sometimes things don't go according to our birth plan and we deal with it. I wish we all had uncomplicated births that could happen in nature, but that's not the case. Simone's birthing video is wonderful, but we all do what we have to do to bring our children safely into this world.
Congratulations to Simone and welcome to the world Perouze Seraphina!
