Gracias Mamá: 5 unforgettable life lessons I learned from my mom

I'm so lucky that my relationship with my mom is as close as it is. I've looked up to her ever since I was born and a lot of my life decisions have been based on her wise advice. My mom has always been there for me, through the good times and bad times, and for this I will always be eternally grateful.

There are some things my mom taught me that I will never, ever forget and I wanted to share some of these lessons because I think it's important for every women, wife, mom and daughter to know…

1.Be fearless. Whenever I asked my mom whether or not I should take on a scary new challenge (play a new sport, move away to a foreign country) she encouraged me. She never tried to make me stay close to home or told me to take the safe way out, she ALWAYS told me to spread my wings and fly and to live without regrets!

2.Stay true to yourself. My mom and my dad have been married for more than 30 years and though they love each other very much, they have each stayed their own strong, independent people. They support each other and make each other so happy, but they also give each other space to explore their own interests.

3.Always believe in YOU. My mom quit her job when I was in middle school to start her own business. I will never forget what an impression that made on me. She worked hard and is super succesful now, but more importantly, she proved to me that if you believe in yourself, anything is possible!

4. Love conquers all. When my grandmother was diagnosed with Ahlzeimer's when I was younger, we were all scared about what was going to happen. But there was no doubt in my mom's mind that we would take care of her … and she did, for more than 10 years. The doctor actually told us that my abuelita lived for so long after the diagnosis because of all the love and comfort our family provided.

5.Have FUN! No matter what, when my family gets together, we have so much fun. We share stories and crack each other up. No one else will ever quite "get" me the way my family does and it feels good to go home and know that I never have to explain where I'm coming from. Also, no matter what's going on in life (we all have our ups & downs) it's important to keep smiling and stay positive! Life is beautiful…
