Married high school principal caught in textual relationship with student

We depend on teachers to be supportive, helpful–and we expect our kids to be safe with them. But what happens when they abuse that trust, like this Brooklyn high school's Assistant Principal? 32-year-old Christian Del Re is being accused of having an inappropriate relationship through texts and phone calls with an 18-year-old female student. Del Re, who is married, is on the verge of termination after police discovered almost 3,000 text messages sent between him and the student during last November and January.

Although Del Re denies any wrongdoing and says the girl reached out to him because she was having personal problems, the evidence shows numerous texts and long phone calls that went on as late as 3 a.m. which was proof enough for the school to dismiss him. Del Re was ratted out by other students last January after they told officials about the questionable relationship he and the student had developed.

I can understand a teacher being concerned about the well-being of a student, but THIS just crosses the line. If my kid was receiving phone calls and texts from a married man past midnight, I'd not only be suspicious but furious! What's worse is that, according to the New York Daily News, they were sending at least 1.3 texts every hour during those months!

In September, he was reassigned from his position, collected his annual salary of more than $100,000 as he awaited a verdict on the pending charges. Although the contents in the text messages and calls have not been released, Del Re still has students on his side who claim that these accusations are false and that he was a helpful educator. Del Re's reasoning for the late night talks were because he would arrive home late from work.

Um, something smells fishy. If this girl had as many issues as he claimed she did, why didn't he take it up with her parents? I don't see him acrcedited for a psychology degree and that's a matter that only a professional should take care of. Otherwise there's no excuse to carry on with a student in that inappropriate manner.

I'm glad that the Education Department is taking this matter seriously because there are so many teachers who think they can get away with this behavior. The fact that department is sticking to their guns is a good tactic to scare any potential offenders.
